Tebow Restructures His Contract

Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos quietly restructured his contract recently. It was originally fill with massive incentives that revolved around playing time, but was replaced with more guaranteed money up front and lowered the escalators he previously had.

1st year of contract – clause said if he played 35% of the offensive snaps last year, he’d have gotten a 2 million bonus.

2nd year and next year of contract – bonus is if Tebow plays in 45% of offensive snaps this year OR next, he collects the bonus. The bonus was originally set at $2.7 million, but with the restructuring it is now only about $1 million.

So the restructuring begs a couple of questions.

Southtown on the Broncos Message board posted this, and I agree:

1. They are preparing for Tim to be plugged into the starting line-up and have a reasonable amount of confidence that he will stay there for at least the next year and a half. This way it minimizes the financial hit the already cash strapped organization faces.

or

2. They are restructuring his contract for the sake of trading him to a team that has plans or may want to start him in the near future but do not want to pay that outlandish incentive.

Would the Broncos redo a deal and give a player more money up front if they planned on cutting ties down the road? If the Broncos wanted to trade/cut Tebow, it would make more sense for them to leave the high incentives/escaltors in the contract and just keep Tim on the bench so he’d have no chance of earning them.

Tim Tebow is the only Broncos QB under contract for 2012. If they are 1-4 at the bye week with Kyle Orton, I strongly believe that they will make the switch to Tim.

What do you think?

Did he really restructure his contract, or is this just another what if? I cannot find any news source that supports this.

@David Fostor: I think this might be the source of the info:

Thanks for the info Brooke. Listened to Nate yesterday, he seems like a hater, but the info may be correct. I hope so. It would be good to see Tim start after the bye week, giving him a couple weeks with the first team couldn’t hurt.

  4. Brooke says:

I waded through all TEN pages of that board discussion, only to discover in one of the last few posts that there was apparently a misunderstanding & Tim’s contract has NOT been restructured (verified by tweets from the radio guy that started all this). Much ado about nothing…

If they really want to trade Tim then they are really saying, “Kyle, take us to the Super Bowl.” Do you really believe they’re capable of saying/believing that?

  6. Brooke says:

No, but I do think they’re capable of wanting to draft Luck. Especially Elway.

  7. David Fostor says:

Remember also that Elway was drafted by the Baltimore Colts, and refused to play for them. Baltimore traded him to Denver. So I wouldn’t put it past him to council Luck on that strategy if Denver doesn’t end up with the number 1 pick.

Sense makes not to me Bears like???

If it a trade move we have to look at the teams that need a QB. I’m just not sure who would offer a trade for tim? The broncos have in away tainted him because of the lack of effort by them for his growth. I think its to not have to pay him that much money, they would’ve traded him if they’d had offers made to them I think. Keeping him for jersey sales or the like is never an issue cause all those sales are divided equal to all 32 teams.
They don’t have to redo the contract to keep from pay’n him the bonus money unless they will make him the starter. Its just tough to put a finger on what they’re doing, hell they might not even know.
Whoever is 1st pick in the draft will take Luck, every team has said that, the biggest play will be for him to go to the 49s because of his coach & jim really wants him & scouts think a few teams will get into massive wheel’n & deal’n to get him because every pro scout working for the NFL has said he is the most sure fire prospect in the past 30 years. If the colts have 1st pick they will take him to replace manning in a few years or use him for massive trade value, that kid may pull a trade of the top half of some teams picks. The very needy teams could trade their 1st,2nd,3rd & 4th for him. He has already been able to read & adjust to a defense like pro guys & the top ones at that, that kid is scary.basicly there’s nothing he lacks at the QB postion.
Elway wants him but where elway went to the same school, jim h was his coach at that school so the biggest play will be to the 49s & they badly need another great QB to sell tickets so giving up a lot they’re willing to do.
That’s why I don’t understand the broncos on things cause I really do think the only chance they have at Luck is to be 1st pick, its confusing, maybe all this is a way of misdirection on tanking the season for luck? Cam newton was 1st pick this year for only 1 reason, luck stayed in school. The broncos have plans but I don’t think they know them that well so us figure’n them out is close to impossible, I think its gonna be a wait & see only cause they don’t seem to know. Oh well, its just confusing with their actions, take care all.

Just Have to comment that I believe this whole thing was to trade Kyle part way through the season since they couldnt make the first trade happen. As a back up he has almost no trade value. Therefore a 9 million dollar bump on a log is deffinately not good either. That is why we never saw a real qb competition and fans are upset about that. A real qb competition is what happened in washington. Both players taking first string snaps etc. That is also why they couldnt defend tim in the media. The most recent tweets coming from the broncos have started to turn Tim’s direction. They do control the airwaves as far as what comes out of there own media relations system. For this entire time they have said, “right now Kyle gives us the best chance to win” and really only said, “Tim isn’t ready, yet.” “Right now.” “Yet!”Get it. If you look at the timeline it really makes sense. Really the organization would be doing the best thing for the team anyway even if this has been so hard on everyone. So I am happy to say i believe this whole thing will be over soon and we can all go back to watching Tim break records and lead the team to victories. It is pretty amazing how much loyalty Tim has from fans. It seems like he has been loyal to them. I never got to watch him in college much other than highlite reels. I am deffinatly happy to have him as a broncos qb.

    Brandon:

Great post. Also, there was a site that recently posted Lucks numbers against Tebows and guess who was the better Quarterback all the way around? YES, TEBOW EVEN BEAT HIM OUT WITH HIS RECORD BREAKING NUMBERS IN COLLEGE; AND THAT IS A PRECURSOR TO SUCCESS B/C HOW DO YOU BREAK RECORDS AND GO TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS IF YOU CAN’T THROW (AS SOMEONE ALSO STATED TO ALL THE DELUSIONAL CRITICS)?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    GO TEBOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. jason says:

Tebow’s college numbers to luck’s dn’t matter much to pro scouts. Were brady, brees, rodgers & many others numbers better? How great are they, I like tebow a lot but andrew luck is complete as a QB & everyone in the nfl thinks so & they do it for a living, we don’t. I wish tebow could start & I think he soon will but for QB in the nfl just because you did great in college doesn’t mean you’ll be great in the nfl. That’s fact. I don’t like the put down of one player just because someone likes a different player & luck does have a better skill set for the pros. Nothing in the world wrong with that. Tebow will start for someone but coming from college luck is better or everyone working in the pros as a scout is wrong. I’ll go with them knowing more tha us.
No reason they both can’t be great.it will be great to see tebow get his shot & do well.
Seriously though pros care more about motion, ability to read a D, comp % & that kind of stuff than win & loss.

  13. jason says:

For many though the whole thing is just driven by emotion & the pros don’t picked based off of that, they would have a job for long. I don’t get the put down of luck just like I don’t get the put down of the media of tebow, I see the knocks but for them to say he’ll never play is just wrong as it is for people thinking tebow was above & beyond a pro prospect compared to luck. Nothing about that is true or belichick, ryan, payton & many more know less than fans, I know that’s very far from true even urban meyers has said luck is more pro ready than tebow was, spread guys aren’t gonna be because part of under center is reading coverage while drop’n back, that’s what snaps under center is about, not just get’n the ball, things never work out to good if a QB waits till after he drops back to start reading coverage & that’s really the only real big problem tebow has but he’ll get it right in time & with play’n (& please don’t say he does great at that I watch plenty to be able to tell if a QB does that well or if they start after they finish the drop & he didn’t do that well last year play’n the last games no kid coming from the spread ever has when they 1st are get’n started in the pro set, takes time to do, be like telling tebow to start thrown’n right handed & thinking he’d dothe sames as he did before.)
I think they’re both great & see not one reason not to like both & see it as it is not the way people wanted to based off of just bias like so many people I know do. I hear too often people argue that a certain QB is the best QB by far just because they like them. A person’s likes & dislikes doesn’t make any player better. It’d be like those guys who say brady, rodgers or manning suck just because they don’t like them as if somehow brady is terrible just because some fan pulls for another QB. Never true or close to true.
Tebow will turn out great I think but the best ever is doudtful.

  14. Steve says:

I doubt that Tebow will get the automatic bid for QB next year. Orton will no doubt be let go, BUT it depends if Tebow can IMPROVE during practice time. Practice time is the only time the coach can see how your mechanics are, take the time to show you the correct options and practice time is where you want to make mistakes.
Tebow is definitely trade bait as well, if the coaches are not in love now they may never be.
