The Wonderful World of Tim Tebow

It wouldn’t be a big game if there weren’t players from the opposing team smack talking Tim Tebow. It’s happened in every big game the Gators have played: FSU, LSU, UGA, Alabama, etc…

Oklahoma Sooners sophomore cornerback Dominique Franks said: “If you look at the three best quarterbacks in the country, they came from the Big 12,” said Franks, referring to Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, Texas’ Colt McCoy and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell.

And he didn’t stop there.

“With us being in Florida and playing against Florida, everybody’s going to think Tebow should have won the Heisman,” Franks said. “But the right person won the Heisman, and we’re going to go out there and show everybody the reason why he won it.”

This is just the type of fire the Gators are looking for. Leave it up to an opposing player to give Tim Tebow and the Gators more of a reason to be pissed off and fight for this game. My prediction: Percy Harvin burns Franks for a 50 yard touchdown catch from Tebow.

There isn’t a team in the country that wouldn’t want Tim Tebow on their roster… but at the right tackle position? Tim’s a strong guy, but I can’t see him packing 320+ pounds.

During the Orange Bowl yesterday, Fox screwed up and put Tim Tebow’s picture in place of senior right tackle Khalil El-Amin of the Cincinnati Bearcats.

No word yet on how many sacks he gave up…

We get a lot of fan mail for Tim Tebow. I try to read every one of them. Some I respond to,and some I don’t. This one came just a few days ago from a student at Mississippi State, a rival SEC School.Once again, I changed the name to protect his identity.

Mr. Tebow you are an inspiration to all SEC football fans and Christians around the world. I thought you were the right chose for the Heisman, and believe if you play next season like you did this season that you will be sitting in New York in December 2009. I wish you and your team luck in the National Championship game in January. Oklahoma and USC are the most overrated programs in the country. I look forward to seeing you and the Florida Gators show the world that the real National Championship game was played in Atlanta, and that Oklahoma should be banned form the title game. Due to the fact that they get embarrassed every time they face the best team from the SEC.

I am writing because I have had a really hard time the last couple of years after serving in Iraq twice, coming home, staying drunk for two years, and then staying sober for a year and counting. I have had a hard time adjusting back to civilian and college life. The last couple of years can only be described as hell. A recently decided to re devote myself to Christ and assault the lies I have been living with. It was you who inspired me too make time to worship God the Father. I have watched many of your games this season and noticed that you often wear eye black stickers with a bible verse written on them. Every game that I saw the verse I went directly to my bible and looked it up. It made me believe that if Tim Tebow, the most famous person in college football, draws his strength from the God of Israel then if I too turned away from sin and followed the light that there might be hope for me after all. I look forward to seeing your Bible verse selection for the BCS game. If you can not think of one that really motivates you please use Matthew 1: 23

“Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. (Matthew 1:23 KJV)

I know the game is after Christmas, but the last part of the verse feels my mind with positive thoughts. When I say the word Emmanuel I truly feel the Holy Sprit rush over me. Wise men know that without Jesus there can be no victory. I urge you to remember the interpretation of this word which is “God among us”, because he will be with you in victory or defeat. Good luck to you and your teammates and thank you from the Miss. State Bulldog nation for our new coach.

Sincerely,
John

Tim Tebow had yet another amazing 2008 season. The Gators aren’t finished yet… they still have the BCS Championship Game in just about 10 days. Someone put together a cool highlight video though in preparation for the Heisman. Even though Tim didn’t win, the video is a great recap of Tebow’s season. It starts off with his famous speech in the press conference following the Ole Miss Game.

I am so behind on the fan email for Tim Tebow it’s not even funny. There are over 200 emails in my inbox, and I’m slowly going through them all one by one. Here are a few of the more recent ones. Just a couple of congratulations, thank yous, etc.

From Nathan:

Proud of your priorities. In a world that puts money and football well before God it is great to see an athlete that stands up for his faith. I pray that you can continue to walk the path that God is leading you in knowing that the more you speak out for your faith the more that you will be persecuted. Be strong and know that your actions do not go unseen. Here is a passage that was on my heart to share with you.

2 Timothy 2. Good luck in the National Championship Game.

From Lisa:

You are the best football player in the world!!!!!! I can’t believe you didn’t win the Heismen award. I was so upset when they said Sam Bradford. You are so cute and have a really good throwing arm. Go Gators!!!!!!!!!!

From Amber:

Tim, Thanks for taking the time for a photo at the St. John’s Town Center in Jax. I’m sure a million people stop you to ask for autographs and photos, and it has to get annoying at some point…especially when you’re just trying to hang out with your friends. So, thank you for indulging my request.

I have a sincere respect for anyone, and especially celebrities, who publicly acknowledge the Heavenly Father and thank Him for their successes, as you have done. In this day and age, it’s rare. Thank you for conducting yourself with integrity and class.

Sincerely, Amber

I’ll be sure to post more as we get closer to the BCS Championship Game.

This story seems to be getting a lot of play on the local radio stations, so I wanted to write a quick post about it on here to fill in those Tim Tebow fans who maybe haven’t heard it. Last week, Mel Kiper Jr (the ESPN “Draft Expert”) had Tim Tebow on his radio show. Kiper questioned whether or not Tim could play the Quarterback position at the NFL level.

Being the competitor that he is, Tebow probably took some offense to the statement and responded “You tell me this… What do you think I need to do to be an NFL quarterback? You tell me that.” Now Tim Tebow is not a cocky guy. He has that level of arrogance that all superstar athletes have, but he doesn’t walk around thinking he’s better then everyone.

Kiper completely dodged the question saying “You’re just too good with the ball in your hands not to think, Could he be Frank Wycheck? Could he be Chris Cooley? That’s why. You’re too good, doing what you do, Tim, running with the football.”

I would LOVE to see a record of all of Kiper’s top NFL prospects and find out how many of them were complete busts. This dude is wrong probably 80% of the time on his draft board, yet he still gets labeled an “expert”. Tebow has been a winner at every level of football he’s ever played, I wouldn’t expect anything less from him in the NFL… at the QUARTERBACK position.

After all the debate about how long Tim Tebow would stay at Florida, it’s finally coming to a close. Yesterday afternoon, Gator superstar Tim Tebow submitted his paperwork to have his draft position evaluated by the NFL Draft Advisory Committee. What this means is a committee of 30 NFL scouts will determine his draft potential. Tebow can then use those results to decide whether or not to file for the draft. The deadline to declare for the 2009 NFL Draft is January 15.

When asked about filing the paperwork: “I haven’t really worried about it,” Tebow said of the paperwork. “I think they’re (school officials) going to help me do that, get it all in or whatever we need to do.”

He said the final score in Miami won’t be dwelled on, when it comes time to decide whether to stay in school or not.

“I don’t think so, to tell you to truth, because win or lose there’s going to be a lot to come back and play for,” Tebow said. “A win, coming back, you have a chance to come back and go for three out of four (national titles) which isn’t bad. Lose, you have a chance to come back here and get your second one. Either way it would be fun.”

I don’t have to rattle off Tim’s stats for you. Everyone knows what a stud he’s been in college. I’m not completely surprised that he’s submitting his draft potential papers, it’s smart to check things out before filing the complete NFL papers.

It was released the other day that Tim Tebow was left off many of the Heisman voter’s ballots completely. That shows a complete lack of class by some voters. It’s fine if voters don’t want to put Tim Tebow 1st, 2nd or even 3rd… but to leave him off the ballot completely is a disgrace. The Heisman Committee prides itself on the integrity of the Award and the voting class. They supposedly work hard to get the best unbiased voters in the country. If you ask me, things need a little shake up at the Heisman headquarters.

Florida coach Urban Meyer questioned the number of voters who left Tim Tebow off their Heisman ballots and wondered if those voters actually watched football. “It was 190 ballots, I heard,” Meyer said after Tuesday’s practice.

Asked if it boggled his mind that so many voters didn’t put Tebow on their ballot, Meyer said: “Uh, yeah. I could go on and on about that. Can you imagine? Think about that for a minute. Maybe you don’t watch football and you’ve got a ballot. I’d like to meet them and say, what? The Heisman goes to the best college football player.”

Asked if too many people had ballots, Meyer took a shot at those who didn’t pick Tebow among their top three. “I don’t know enough about it, but I know there’s 190-some too many. If there’s 194 that left him off, there’s 194 too many ballots out there,” Meyer said.

I love the way Meyer conducts himself with the media and isn’t afraid to step up and protect his players. It shows a lot about him and does wonders in the recruiting world.

It’s unfortunate that Tim Tebow did not win the Heisman Trophy on Saturday night in New York City. Same Bradford of Oklahoma was definitely deserving of the award. I still think Tebow means for to the Gators and can be attributed to their success on a greater level then the other three, but we won’t complain here. Afterall, the Heisman winner always plays bad in the Bowl game.

Check out the results.

2008 Heisman Trophy Voting Results

1. Sam Bradford 1,726
2. Colt McCoy 1,604
3. Tim Tebow 1,575

Tebow did receive the most 1st place votes but got only the third most total votes.

Here’s a video from the post-ceremony press conference.

If I had a nickel for ever Tim Tebow awards post I wrote, I’d be a very rich man. Add another one to the mantle!

Tim Tebow won the Maxwell Award for the second year, edging Texas’ Colt McCoy and Texas Tech’s Graham Harrell for the honor given to college football’s best all-round player Thursday night at the college football awards.

The Florida star joined Notre Dame quaterback Johnny Lattner as the only two-time winners of the Maxwell Award. Lattner won in 1952-53.

Tebow, who will lead Florida against Sam Bradford’s Oklahoma Sooners in the national championship game next month, was the first sophomore to win the Heisman last year and, on Saturday in New York, could become the second player to win it twice.

“All these awards are special—and they mean a lot to me—but they don’t compare to winning the championship because you share that with everyone on the team,” Tebow said. “That’s the one I really want.”

The versatile Tebow is fifth in the nation in passer rating (176.7) with 28 touchdown passes and only two interceptions. He hasn’t been asked to run as much this season, but still has 564 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns.

Next up is the Heisman Trophy tomorrow night. There’s no telling just yet who will win. The latest StiffArm projection shows Bradford at 60.8%, McCoy at 54.6% and Tebow at 52.1%. I’ll be sure to update you this weekend when the news hits.
