Cincinnati Bengals vs. Denver Broncos – Week 2

Time to start looking ahead to this weekend’s matchup, when the Cincinnati Bengals (1-0) come to Denver to challenge the Broncos (0-1). The Broncos are at home again for the second week in a row. Let’s hope Sunday afternoon’s game has a better outcome than the game against Oakland on MNF.

There’s been a lot of Tim Tebow chat this week. We had the Orton meltdown, the Tebow chants in the stadium and a group of die hard fans who said they will buy billboards in the Denver area asking Coach Fox to bench Orton for Tebow. If the Broncos got off to a rocky start on Sunday, will the fans react again? I think so.

Don’t expect Coach Fox to make a move to Tebow in the game though. I think the Broncos coaches and front office are so stubborn they won’t put Tim in the game unless both Orton and Quinn get hurt. They just don’t want the fans to think they can influence their coaching decisions. It makes sense to have a few wildcat type plays in the offensive scheme each week for Tim to run, but I just don’t believe they’ll do it.

As Tebow fans, we want his team to win … but more importantly we want him to play. All we can hope for right now is for Orton to blow the game again.

The Tebow chants may hurt Tim chances and the over all team More than it Helps, Remember if he ever gets out there the team has to back Him.

  2. Tisa says:

All Tim has to do is win and the rest of the team will be all over backing him. But- I hope Tim’s days of wasting his time in Denver are growing short. If he is truly working for two guys who are too stubborn to use his talents to help Orton out, then its time to move on.

  3. brandon says:

Tim didn’t even get a chance to be the starting quarterback this year. Look all the way back to training Camp and notice that he never played with the first team. Only on the second and third vs the first And second string defense. ( think about the scrimmage. Why not play Orton against the first string)Mabey they do want developement from him. I don’t know, but I do know he was never allowed to compete from day one. I am a Denver bronco fan and I don’t think it is right. He earned it last year. Im not buying what their selling. Just biding my time.

As usual, John Bena of milehighreport.com, has clearly explained exactly why Broncos management isn’t about to start Tim anytime soon. I HIGHLY recommend reading this entire column & also recommend looking at the first several comments after it:
    http://www.milehighreport.com/2011/9/16/2428948/the-forest-through-the-trees-what-is-happening-at-quarterback-for-the

For those aren’t familiar w/John Bena, I learned more about the NFL from listening to the few MHR podcasts he did last year than I did from watching a year’s worth of NFL Network. I’ve found him to be very objective, fair, & honest.

I’m probably wrong, but my attitude about Tim staying at Denver is exactly the opposite of most other TeBroncos. Tebow fits in Denver perfectly. A huge portion of the Denver fanbase have taken to him very quickly. It’s the current leadership of the Broncos themselves who don’t seem to fit.

    Great pro-Tebow article:

Also, a good Woody Paige mailbag about Tebow & Orton:

  6. Tisa says:

The fanbase does not decide if Tebow can play, the leadership does and they do not like Tebow as a QB. There are a couple of recent posts on Tebow’s Eye Black that you might read. The feeling is that they will never play him. They will milk him for everything they can as far as marketing is concerned for this year.

  7. Brooke says:

@Tisa: Yes, I’ve read the tebowseyeblack.com posts & listened to the interview w/Woody Paige linked to there. Woody’s made it clear that Broncos management doesn’t like Kyle Orton, either. They’re just going w/him b/c they feel it’s a safer choice than Tim. I can’t believe that Broncos management has no faith in Tim at all, b/c just a couple of months ago they were trying to trade Orton & the starting job was Tim’s to lose.

Woody said that those who were chanting for Tebow at the game were a small group. I also still see many fans supporting Orton &/or having no faith in Tim on the Bronco groups & sites that I follow-although I have seen some people change their minds since the Raiders game. But I think if the Broncos, & especially Orton, continue playing like they did last week for the next few games, the number of fans calling for Tebow to start-or at least just to be used in red zone packages-will greatly increase & Orton will lose the players’ support, which he allegedly still has at this time. At that point, management will be under a LOT of pressure to start Tebow. The ideal time for a switch to happen would be after game 5 against the Chargers. The next week is a bye week, so Tim would have an extra week of practice w/the starting team. Then they go to Miami to play the Dolphins. It’s before that game that Tim & the BCS-era Gators are going to be honored.

Admittedly, this scenario is dependent on Orton & the Broncos continuing to play badly & management not being insanely stubborn about playing Tim. Although Fox doesn’t like adapting the scheme to players’ abilities, he’s been willing to in the past when necessary. When his starting QB was injured a few years ago, he switched to a Wildcat offense to replace him. So he might be willing to at least use Tebow in packages if necessary this year. However, if Orton & the team start playing well, that’s a different situation entirely. But we’re still at the beginning of the season. A lot can happen.

For anyone who hasn’t seen this fascinating post from someone claiming to be one of Tim’s former high school coaches, here it is:

    http://forums.denverbroncos.com/showthread.php?t=193950

A lot of people on the forums think this is a fake & I find it suspicious, too (b/c he criticized Orton & Fox & included his email address). But it’s been a full day since it was posted & the guy this is attributed to hasn’t come forward to deny it yet. Hmmmm…

I especially love this part: ‘My first day on the job I hadn’t quite learned all our players/coaches names yet, so when practice was over and all the coaches gathered to watch film util about 11:00 pm, I assumed the 6-3 200 pound man-child sitting next to me was a young assistant coach. Turns out it was our 15 year old QB. If the coaches were watching film until midnight, Timmy was watching film until midnight- and then he’d take the tape home and get up early and watch it again before his school work began.’ The post might be a fake, but doesn’t that just sound like Tim? :)

  9. Tisa says:

Gators played great yesterday for such a young bunch of guys. I am really liking the passion and energy. That was missing last year. Will be watching outside the lines for Timmy today and rooting for the Bengals. ( I know Timmy would hate this, but its the only way I see for EFX to wake up and play Tebow.) Orton needs to keep playing miserably. God Bless you, Tebow! Brooke, one thing in the Tebow’s Eye Black post that didn’t ring true with me was the time frame that the man gave for Uf and Meyer trying to recruit Tebow. It doesn’t squaire with Tebow’s account in his testimony or his book. I teach in a high school in Pensacola and my football players were aware of Tebow and the possibility that he would go to Florida during his junior year- with Ron Zook-a good reason to think seriously about Alabama. Then Urban came and the rest is history. Our players were all talking about what a beast Tebow was. But I agree, it does sound just like him.

  10. Brooke says:

He just came into the game & the crowd started loudly cheering. They apparently didn’t know he was merely lining up at WR. It’s that kind of fanbase reaction that will ultimately force EFX to start Tebow if the Broncos keep losing. But so far today they look ok.

  11. jason says:

This is an example of what causes some of the hard knocks against tebow. I have a bunch of people at my home right now watching football. They came over cause I’m a football nut & have a lot of tvs & watch every game. Anyway this is where the tebow knocks come from some people & I quote “I wish tebow played in new england because he’d be able to take brady’s starting job in a year or 2″. That’s why tebow gets knocked bad by some because not one person who knows about the NFL would ever think that, he’d have no chance unless brady got hurt. Its the pushing by many that no one can ever be better when that’s so very far from fact.
I like tebow but it’s things like that which make people roll their eyes because people thinking things like that know so little about football.
Its fine to pull for someone but atleast people could know more & not put down people who may end up being some of the greatest players in the history of the NFL. That just makes people look silly to anyone who knows about football, I mean other than screams at a tv nonstop people.

  12. David Fostor says:

    Yeah, well.

  13. Brooke says:

This article is not well-written (at times it’s downright confusing), but the basic point the author is making I agree w/:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/851656-tim-tebow-will-his-most-vocal-fans-play-a-role-in-shipping-him-out-of-denver

  14. jason says:

The bleacher report is something not to ever bother with, they don’t get into if a report is right or wrong. They throw stuff up no matter who comes up with it or what they know about it. Don’t bother with what they say.

Yeah well it’s fine to wish but to really think tebow could out do brady or manning just shows lack of knowledge about the NFL & not much more. I think tebow can do something oneday but he has a very long way to go before he gets near the greats. A very long way.

  15. David Fostor says:

So instead of developing him, letting him play and get the NFL experience he needs, Fox lines him up at WR. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Orton & Co. barely escape with a win at home against a horrible Bengals team that starts a third string rookie QB on their way to, at best, a 6-10 season. You can’t say with a straight face that Tebow is any less ready to play in the NFL than most of the QB’s in the NFL today. I’ve yet to see anyone claim that Tim is already as good as Brady, or Manning. The fans are tired of watching this mediocre team play while one of the most exciting players ever sits on the bench (or lines up at WR). That’s all we’re saying. Wanting to see Tim Tebow play in Denver has everything to do with his playing, and nothing to do with Tom Brady or Peyton Manning or anyone else. Orton is in his 7th NFL season, 3rd as the Broncos starter. And if the defense hadn’t stepped up against the 3rd string, rookie-led Bengals, Denver would be 0-2. Well, the season gets tougher starting next week, then gets downright painful. Orton doesn’t have the skill set to be a top half of the NFL QB. Let’s see if Tim does.

  16. jason says:

I’m with you on wanting tebow to get his shot & I want him to be great, I wish everyone on earth that’s not an evil person the best at whatever they do. Frankly I hope he can get traded because the jack As in the media will blame tebow. I have faith that he will be something special in the nfl when his time comes. I do know people who think that he can out do any player in the game & they think that no matter what, to be honest that’s annoy’n because of how little they know, they just love the kid. I understand the love for him & think it’d be wrong for any person to not love someone like him, we need more great men like he is.
I want him to get his chance & have no doudt he will but the friends I have & other people I know are not alone in the feelings about tebow being able to out do any other QB. That’s not true as of yet, I love kids like him & want to see him make his dream come true but don’t want to see people upset, his time will come, Mr. Foster me & you hope for the same thing & I just kinda wanna temper if you will some things & really not knock people for how they feel but we have to see things as they are right now. Tim won’t give up on anything & that’s what makes him so great but really what makes him best is as great as a football player he is he’s an even better man & that’s what its really all about.
I got a chance to really explain to my friend about things in football & she understood where I was coming from & that’s so great & has been my intent on this great site, you folks are devoted & that’s great. My dear friend has start to see what I’m say’n about tim. That’s what I hope for you folks here, why would I bother coming to a tebow fan site & waste my time if I wasn’t just try’n to point some things out? That’s all, I just wanna temper some things is all.
The unfair part that tebow faces is the new GM & head coach, that’s why a trade would be great for tebow.
Anyway please take care as always & we hope for the same thing of see’n tebow have a great career in the nfl, I just want to share, even if some may not think it is, an unbias view of things. Take care as always.

  17. David Fostor says:

Understood Jason, thank for the clarification. These are hard times to be a Broncos fan, given the management of this team, but it’s always great to wish Tim the best. It’s kind of funny, he can now ad NFL wide receiver to his resume. Who’d have thought?

  18. Brooke says:

There’s a poll over at BR on whether or not people think Tebow should be a Wide Receiver:

    http://bleacherreport.com/articles/854986-tim-tebow-wide-receiver-broncos-not-helping-themselves-by-using-tebow-at-wr

Needless to say, I voted NO.

  19. ck says:

In response to Tisa and Brooke:
Glad to say that I voted NO also!!!
Don’t worry b/c Tebow will certainly GET HIS CHANCE DUE TO THE SHEER VOLUME OF TEBOW’S MANY FANS PLUS ORTON WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO TAKE ALL THE SACKS HE HAS BEEN GETTING DUE TO HIS BELOW AVERAGE SCRAMBLING ABILITIES!!!!!!!!!! THE FAN BASE HAS A GREAT DEAL OF INFLUENCE B/C THEY ARE PAYING TO SEE A WINNER AND WITHOUT THEIR SUPPORT NO ONE GETS PAID AS BASEBALL MOST CERTAINLY FOUND OUT WHEN THE FANS STAYED AWAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WE ARE PROUD OF YOU TIM SO DON’T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF AND KNOW THAT “THE WEAK BAND TOGETHER TO PULL DOWN THE STRONG AND EMPTY VESSELS MAKE THE MOST NOISE!!!!!” YOU WILL ALWAYS REMAIN OUR GREATEST QB EVER AND NO ONE CAN CHANGE OUR OPINION OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WILL REMAIN IN OUR PRAYERS FOR VICTORY IN ALL THINGS!!!!!!!!!!
    GBX2/TEBOW/GATORS

  20. Brooke says:

“THE FAN BASE HAS A GREAT DEAL OF INFLUENCE”

Absolutely. I do believe that Tim was used as a wide receiver today strictly to appease the fans. Many other Broncos could have been chosen for that job over Tim, but they chose Tim anyway. If the announcer hadn’t said that Tim was coming into the game, I would have known something was happening b/c of the crowd’s reaction. There was no play going on, but many in the crowd suddenly started cheering & clapping.

The Broncos won today by only 2 points against another bad team that was starting a rookie QB. If the Broncos-especially Orton-don’t improve & start winning against good teams, even the Broncos fans who are skeptical about Tim will be wanting management to make changes on the roster after a few more games. If they do improve & start winning, though, that’s a different story…

  21. Tisa says:

As David said, things are about to get real tough for the Broncos. I can’t wait to see them try to handle Green Bay in Green Bay. People are talking about what Suh is going to with Orton and his poor o-line. I saddens me to see Tim used at WR. It in no way assuages my desire to see him play. If the injuries keep going the way they are, there will be no
Broncos by midseason. I wonder why they seem to have such a problem with injuries.
