Oakland Lays a 59-14 Beatdown on Denver

Wow! What a game yesterday afternoon by the Oakland Raiders. Not many people picked Oakland to win the game, let alone drop 59 points on the Broncos in the worst blow out of the season. After seeing the score 24-0 at the end of the first quarter, and then 38-7 at halftime I thought for sure Tim Tebow would see significant playing time in the second half – since the game was out of reach. So did all the fans in the stadium, who started a chant “We Want Tebow! We Want Tebow!”

But Coach McDaniels never put him in there to run the offense. Tim did play, but was limited to just handing the ball off – he didn’t record a rushing stat or pass. “It was just the situation of the game,” Tebow said. “I just try to do the best I can with my role.” With the game out of reach almost the entire second half, why not throw Tim in there and let him sling the ball around to see what he can do. Also, you remove the risk of starter Kyle Orton getting hurt.

When asked about why Tim Tebow didn’t get more playing time, Coach McDaniels said “We were just trying to run our offense and made a decision not to do that in that kind of a game. That’s not really the time that I’d want him to get work, anyway.” I guess it would probably be better for Tim to get a lot of game-time experience if it were the Broncos who were winning by 30 points. You don’t want to throw a rookie QB into a really bad situation that could force him to make mistakes and hurt his development / confidence.

What would you have done if you were the coach? Would you have played Tim the entire 4th quarter?

    WOW!Coach McD is CRAZY!

I was also surprised McD didn’t put him in. A game where Denver’s losing by a lot would seem to be a better time to use Tim than a game where Denver’s winning by a lot. If Tim played badly in a game Denver was winning, he’d eventually either have to be taken out of the game or cause Denver to lose. But if he played badly in a game like yesterday, he could still be left in there, b/c they’d simply be losing by even more points.
Maybe McD thought the kind of defense Oakland has wouldn’t be a good fit for Tim or maybe Tim still isn’t doing as well as he’d like in practice. Or maybe he wants to help Kyle Orton stay high in the ‘passing yards’ category (he was 2nd in the league before yesterday)? Sometimes I can’t figure out McD.

Maybe not getting Tebow hurt is more important to McD. than getting Orton hurt. He could have used Quinn as well in the fourth quarter but he chose to stay with Orton. It is baffling.

That’s rough, frankly, it didn’t look like any of the Broncos wanted to play after the 1st 5 minutes. On one hand, it was theoretically a good opportunity to get Tim some experience, on the other hand, Kyle Orton technically would be the QB you’d want to stick with in hopes of getting your team back into it. HOWEVER, by the 4th quarter there wasn’t any hope of getting back into it, and since I would imagine as a head coach you’d want Orton (who can be injury prone, I’m a Bears fan, I’ve always liked Orton but he’s had a history of ankle problems) to not get injured when the game is so far out of hand that you’d want to take him out for preservation sake. If I was McDaniels I’d probably have put Tim in at some point in the 4th, if nothing else, for that fire he showed at UF that can inspire the guys around him to pick their game up.
