Tim Tebow’s NFL Preseason Debut vs. The Bengals

If you’ve been following Tebow Zone since the beginning, then you know that the Thursday or Friday before one of Tim Tebow‘s games we like post a game preview where we outline key matchups, stats to look at and go over our predictions. Well, preseason is a little bit different because we don’t know exactly how much playing time Tim will get and teams don’t care if they win or lose.

Even if the outcome of Sunday’s game vs. the Cincinnati Bengals doesn’t matter, that still isn’t slowing Timmy down.

“I’m very excited about it,” Tebow said after Thursday’s training camp practice, during which the team began installing its game plan for the opening exhibition. “It’s somewhat of a dream come true. Even though it’s just a preseason game, it’s still playing a game in the NFL and, you know, I can’t lie. There will be a lot of emotions going through me.”

Tim is listed as third on the depth chart so he will see playing time in the late 3rd quarter and 4th quarter. It will be tough to evaluate Tim’s performance based solely on stats – he’ll be playing behind the third string offensive line and throwing to third string receivers. What we want to look for on Sunday is that Tim has a good feel for the position, he shows pocket presence, delivers a few passes with his new throwing motion, and shows solid footwork in a 5-7 step drop.

“I definitely will have a lot of pride in wearing those colors, have a lot of pride in playing for the Broncos – also, a lot of humility in having the chance to play a game in the NFL,” he said. “I just want to take advantage of it, just try to go through my assignments, do everything I was taught to do and, just enjoy it. Just have fun, that’s what it’s about and that’s usually when I play my best.”

I’ll go ahead and predict some stats for you, but I’m really just taking a wild guess. 7/12 passing for 88 yards – no touchdowns, no interceptions. He’ll also rush the ball 2 times for 10 yards. I think the Bengals will win the game though because they’ll outscore the Broncos 1st team.

The game will be broadcast live on the NFL Network and locally in Denver and Cincinnati.

Especially with QBs rookies start out 3rd or 4th string for the 1st preseason game. Unless, of course a team doesn’t have much depth at the position. (The Broncos are arguable, but Orton is decent, Quinn is shaky and if they don’t want to carry 3 QBs on the roster on game days, and have packages for Tebow, he’ll leap frog Quinn in the next few weeks). It’s hard to promote a rookie QB without evaluating his performance during a game, even if it is only preseason.

It also needs to be said that this game is NOT a nationally televised game. It will be shown in the Denver and Cincinnati markets ONLY

I took my kids + friends to Broncos training camp earlier this week…We waited/waited till the end so my kids could get autographs from whoever was signing. They only got one, but didn’t want to go, cause Tebow was still on the field talking with coaches. They were hopeful he would sign, but players are assigned certain days to sign, and it wasn’t his day. But….he started at the beginning of the long line and gave everykid in line a high five, and said “hey buddy” to my 7 year old son. His poise in person is remarkable- he is so young..but an obvious rock-solid stand out person. We saw him the day he shaved his head- so didn’t see the awful hair cut…but a big ‘ol bald head. My kids loved it :)

I just got back from the Bengals & Bronco’s preseason game. Tim looked really good. Very relaxed and comfortable. Last 3 seconds he got his first NFL running TD. Perfect Tebow-style gun and run play. He plowed through both Bengal defenders guarding the goal line. Knocked th wind out of one of them. Classic Tebow He definitely looked and performed better than Brady Quinn. Quinn should be worried. With a little more playing time, he will definitely get better. Having to behind a 3rd string offensive line definitely hurt his performance but his natural ability to move out of the pocket aided in immensely in his decent performance. 6 out of 10 IMHO.
