I think we’ve joked about the Florida Gators erecting a statue in Tim Tebow‘s honor before, but now it appears that this will become a reality. The Florida Gators already placed a plaque of ‘The Promise’ on the stadium, but now they will immortalize Tim in a different way. Florida’s athletic budget includes a project to pay $550,00 for the construction of larger than life statues of the program’s three Heisman Trophy winners: Tim Tebow (2007), Danny Wuerffel (1996) and Steve Spurrier (1966).
“It’s a chance to honor and celebrate our tradition,” Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley said. “Anytime you have that type of tradition, we want to make sure to honor it. It’s something people are aware of them, obviously, but they can come and take pictures of them. And that’s how you build tradition. You go to a lot of schools that have several Heisman Trophy winners and they have displays, they have statutes what have you. It’s just building tradition and honoring three very special people.”
Work has already begun, but it’s not supposed to be finished until after the start of the 2010 season. I imagine that it will be located near the Florida Gator Football Experience at the stadium.
Building a statue of great players and coaches is not something out of the ordinary. Texas has a statue of Earl Campbell, Chicago has a statue of Jordan, Camden Yards has one of Babe Ruth.
What are your thoughts on Florida building a Tim Tebow statue outside the stadium?
wow…. thats pretty amazing for some one that is not even a year out of florida. and he already has plaque of his speech made before his SR year. I dont think it can get any better for tebow rememberance. He has deffenitly gave florida alot during his four years there and he will have plenty more to give in the future. This guy is probably one of the most amazing college football has ever seen…it wont be the same ever again.
He definately deserves one after what he did in Florida. He is, arguably the best football player to come out of Florida and deserves to be commemorated in this respect. GO TEBOW!
Tim Tebow has the ability to inspire those around him. His story has the affect of inspiring generations. I believe UF did just what it should in commemorating not just Tebow but the great tradition of Florida football. For years to come those statues will provide the Gator nation with pride and the heart-warming story of these men of character who raised the very definition of what it means to be a leader. Tebow gets praised for what he did ON the field but I believe his parents and many others would agree that it is what he did OFF the field that is truly inspiring.
To add I would love to see them add a small portion to remember Florida’s great coaches. I would also love to see the SEC have a particular commemorative hall or a SEC Hall of Fame if you will. Tebow helped to usher in a new respect not only for the Florida program but for the entire South Eastern Conference.
It still won’t beat “Tim Treebow” outside Ballyhoos though
