Tim Tebow’s Eye Black

By popular request through emails, I’ve decided to create a post here to record all of the different Bible verses Tim Tebow wears on his eye black for the games. I’ve created a link on the sidebar that takes you directly to this post, so following every game just click on that link if you want to see the latest verse. I will continue to update this thread through the 2009 season. I’m not sure if he’ll be allowed to wear unique eye black in the NFL.

Through the entire 2008 season, Tim Tebow wore Phil 4:13 which says “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” However, during the National Title game he wore John 3:16 which says “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Now on to the 2009 games:

Charleston Southern: Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”

Troy: Mark 8:36 “What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul.”

Tennessee: Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

Kentucky: Isaiah 40:31 “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they.”

LSU: Thessalonians 5:18 “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. That’s pretty fitting for last nights game don’t you think?”

Arkansas: Psalms 23:1 “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Mississippi State: Ephesians 4:32 “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Georgia: Philippians 4:6-7 “Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Vanderbilt: Colossians 3:23 “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men.”

South Carolina: Joshua 1:8-9 “8- This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. 9- Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.”

Florida International: Romans 1:16 “I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.”

Florida State: Hebrews 12:1-2 “1Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. 2Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.”

SECCG: John 16:33 – “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

Sugar Bowl: Ephesians 2:8-10 – “8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”

It seems to me that people forget a very important aspect of this discussion. Tim Tebow has a constitutional right to put whatever he would like on his eyeblack. The first amendment guarentees us all that same right, regardless of our personal beliefs. I personally could care less what he chooses to fill that space with. It could be a “666″ on one side and a cross on the other. ITS HIS FACE. The main reason I was compelled to comment on this topic was the ridiculous nature of some of the remarks on this post. To the people that judge the individuals who criticize Tebow: According to Christian beliefs, isn’t it God’s place to do the judging? I seem to remember the bible saying something along the lines of, “Let he who is without sin, cast the first stone.”. It’s pretty apparent to me there are a bunch of hypocrites on this site, on either side of the discussion, that may consider dropping the stones they were so set on throwing.

  6. Annie says:

As soon as I saw his Eye Black for the Championship Game, I looked it up. I knew that Tim was telling the world how the game was likely going to end, but was proclaiming that God has a plan. It broke my heart to watch it unfold, but Tim Tebow is bigger than a football game. God’s will be done.

  7. Braeden says:

I am 9 years old and I love God and the way Tim Tebow puts memory versus on his eye black. I am starting to do it for my sports. Go Gators!

  8. Tony says:

thank You Lord for your work being done in tim. we pray that Your will be done and many will be led to You. -in Christ Jesus’ name.

  9. k2 says:

Awesome on so many fronts. Boldness beyond measure at a time where Christ is not allowed even at the UN anymore and is minimized at the White House of all things!

    God Bless America!

  10. David says:

I can’t wait until he goes to the NFL and they finally make him not do this – just as college should. It’s such a selfish act.

This man is one of a kind. He has so much faith and love that iit is crazy. He has the leadership like a lion and courage like a bear. He is one of the greatest athletes i have seen not just for football because he made a differece in the schoool and millions of people. He has so much heart that it is insane. Tim Tebow thanks for everthing and you will always be a legend to me. Thankyou

  13. Sam Fields says:

I can’t wait for him to go to the NFL so he can violate the Sabbath and show what a phoney he is

  14. Steve Roberts says:

Sam, I since sarcasm. You don’t understand what it is that Tebow and other christians represent. You see, for us Jesus is life and the rest is 2nd. Football is his ministry. He is not perfect. I think he will admit that. But he is forgiven of his sins and you can be too if you chose to have a relationship with Jesus. Tim is human and he does stumble like all of us do but I would hardly call him a phoney.

  15. David says:

Steve, I sense a bad speller – YOU!
    But I forgive you . . .

  16. Sam Fields says:

Unlimited forgiveness is a license for unlimited misconduct. It tells some that you can knowingly and willfully continue to break the rules because an apology to an invisible being gets you unlimited Get Out of Hell Free cards.

The requirent to not work on the Sabbath is a clear as a bell. But Tebow apparently thinks it does not apply to him or if it does he will ask for forgiveness after he has cashed the check.

He fits into what I have learned about the vast majority of you Christians. They don’t believe what the Bible says. But they are convinced that the Bible says what they believe.

  17. Punisher says:

“He fits into what I have learned about the vast majority of you Christians. They don’t believe what the Bible says. But they are convinced that the Bible says what they believe.”

Oh really? Read Colossiasn 2:16-18. It says sabbath days among several other aspects of the Mosaic laws were shadows of things to come, and now Christ is the reality. That analogy is also used for OT sacrifices (shadows) and Christ in the book of Hebrews.

Your attacks on Christians are way out of line.

  18. Jeanie says:

I hope if Timmy goes to the NFL that he will continue to spead the word of God through his eye blacks. I have been more excited about looking for the bible verses than the games. What an exceptional role model.

  19. Dawn says:

Why are so many of you so angry about what Tebow wears on his eyes – if you don’t like it why did you bother to come to this site and looking them up (deep down you may be looking for guidance – Yes, Tebow verses may help you find that). Why would the NFL tell Tebow he can’t wear the Bible verses? – 1st Amendment (look it up). Lastly, football is a game and not really work — so is he really going to be working on the Sabbath — I think he might just be going out with some friends throwing the football around.

To those of you who have nothing but negative remarks — go to a different site and spew your pessimistic remarks – some people (no matter how few) do like to be positive and have someone inspire them to do better things in life (try it sometime – you might like it).

    Go Gators!!

  20. Punisher says:

Folks actually claim Tebow having Bible verses on him violate seperation of church and state. I kid you not. Check some of the comments by some of the posters there griping about how Tebow’s display of faith is along the lines of Muslim fanaticism and Crusades:

    http://www.orlandosentinel.com/sports/os-bianchi-sec-1206-20091205,0,5054476,comment-display-all.column

  21. Paul says:

I think it would be great if Tebow wore II Timothy 4:7. for the bowl game. He is a great witness and inspiration for the world, and his college career is ending…

  22. Punisher says:

“Unlimited forgiveness is a license for unlimited misconduct. It tells some that you can knowingly and willfully continue to break the rules because an apology to an invisible being gets you unlimited Get Out of Hell Free cards.”

Then you don’t know what Christians believe on faith, repentance, justification, sanctification, etc.

  23. Sam Fields says:

Notwithstanding the Ten commandments his ministry and his opportunity to pocket millions just happen to fit together.

  24. Sam Fields says:

    HOW CONVENIENT

  25. Sharon Hand says:

Guess what, folks? God still loves you/us! And He showed that love through His Son, Jesus Christ.
To coin a phrase “We are not perfect, only forgiven.”

  26. Punisher says:

“Notwithstanding the Ten commandments his ministry and his opportunity to pocket millions just happen to fit together.”

You are a sad man. Tebow has been doing his ministry many years before anybody heard of him in high school.

  27. Ryan says:

Thank you so much. I have started reading the bible every day. Tim Tebow has inspired me to incourage other kids to start reading the bible. I figured a good way to do this would be to write a few of the bible verses on my basketball shoe for when i play everybody asks me what they mean and i say look it up in the bible. Now my team reads a passage out of the bible before we play. Once again thank You

  28. David says:

    Dawn,

The NFL is a business and that business dictates what a player can or cannot wear, so the Bible references will not be allowed. As for comments that folks like Sam and I make, we are allowed to do that on any site we choose. So please don’t tell us to go elsewhere. I don’t know Sam’s motives, but as for mine, I just enjoy toying with narrow-minded religious like yourself.

  29. KtrMusic says:

I have some editing for you. In Isaiah 40:31 you messed up the ending by cutting it to short. It is “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they will walk and not be faint.” Then on Thessalonians 5:18 you accidently put in the “That’s pretty fitting for last’s nights game don’t you think?” in the verse. Haha, but that’s definitely not part of the verse. Just thought i would give you a heads up on what was wrong.

  30. Sammael says:

    You Suck Tebow

  31. Jim says:

What a great website you’ve put together. It’s obviously stirred some good conversation from both believers and non-believers. I’d like to comment on a few observations.
1)There is a voting/polling mechanism on the site about where Tim might rank “as a college football player”. That doesn’t matter to me and I think it’s almost impossible to rate or rank the top players in history. And as someone pointed out, it’s just a game. However, I believe he might be one of the greatest leaders in college football history, and quite possible the best role model.
    2) Anyone who thinks what Tim does is based on selfish motivation obviously dosen’t know much about Tim. Is it really selfish to spend your free time in a third world county, helping doctors perform minor surgeries on poverty stricken children who are in need? Participation in a mission or being a missionary is about as far from being selfish as one can get. If you don’t agree or are unsure, do some research, look at video or pictures from mission trips.
3)The stronger one’s faith and commitment to living a God-centered life is, the more persucution they will be subject to. So keep on pesecuting Tim, that’s only a testament to how wonderful a Christian he is.
4)Anyone making reference to the “Get out of jail free card” or Christians believing so they have a free pass to sin, just doesn’t understand what being re-born in the Holy Spirit is all about. Once one begins to live in the Joy and Grace of the Lord they’re number goal and motivation is to live a God-centered life. The desire to live avoiding sin becomes stronger than ever and one is happy and joyful to avoid sin.
    5) References to “working on the sabath” come from folks that might not quite understand the difference between the old covenant (Old Testament), and the new covenant (New Testament)that came to the world through Jesus Christ.
We as individuals all have a right to our own opinions. However, opinions change as our knowledge changes. Be open minded, continue to learn and expand your knowledge. Your opinions, attitudes, and how you live your life will change. Mine did.

  32. Jonny says:

Hey, ya know I just want to throw this out there. Tebow is a good dude, not a fan (being a buckeye and all). He has every right to put what ever the heck he wants to on his face, I get that. He’s a leader, loves family, god yadda yadda yadda. But it seems to me that if he were say, oh I don’t know, Muslim or Mormon or what have you and he put sayings from the Koran on his face AND still showed an amazing amount of character you all wouldn’t be so far up his junk. Just a quick “Check yo self” moment.

  33. Marsha says:

Jonny. Perfect observation! The reason everyone is so “far up his junk” is that he is a Christian and sharing THE TRUTH. I’m not a Florida Gator fan and certainly not a Muslim fan but I certainly am a fan of Christ. In our politically correct society the only “group” that can be openly belittled are Christians and I applaud this young man for not being afraid to share his faith in Christ.

  34. Mustard says:

I like the Gators & appreciate Tim Tebow as a person and athlete. Marsha, you might have missed Jonny’s point.
1)Imagine that Tebow is of another religion other than Christianity. 2)Now, imagine he put the quotes/verses from that other religion/Koran,etc. on his face. 3)Would you then applaud him for honoring his chosen/imagined religion?

  35. rhonda says:

I only watch tebow’s games because otgerwise, I hate footbell. he makes it fun.

  36. Marsha says:

Mustard – Thank you for giving me an opportunity to clarify myself. The simple answer to your question is “No”. I aplaud him because he is sharing Christianity and I make no apology for that fact. Actually, I really don’t care that much about his football career etc. I am just impressed that he is sharing Christ and I am not surprised that he is receiving so much criticism about it. In fact, if he was a Muslim with verses of the Koran on his face everyone would be afraid to critcize him for fear of being labled a hate monger. We need to be ready to take a stand for Christ.

  37. Brian says:

I thank God for Tim’s witness of these powerful scriptures. It’s impossible to remain silent once you know the truth. I pray that all believers would have the same boldness to share the truth in love and allow God to confirm His word with signs and wonders. Tim Tebow is His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that he should walk in them. Go Tim! Fulfill your destiny.

  38. Oklahoma Sooner Fan says:

What an amazing young man…if for nothing else, he inspires many of us to get out our Bibles when it isn’t Sunday and read Scriptures. He is an inspiration to all young men and women everywhere. As an Oklahoma Sooner, and one who witnessed Tebow beating us last year in the NC Game, I pray he continues his inspirational journey with or without a football in his hands.

  39. Jeremy says:

It takes a lot of courage to do things like that, but Tim Tebow is a true ongoing Christian

  40. Laura Greene says:

Tim Tebow is what every mom would like their daughters to bring home. He is a great role model and will have my support in what ever he does.

  41. joey taylor says:

i think he should be able to wear wat u want to in the nfl wen u r that good as ti
tebow and i would want to be just like him wen i grow up:)!!!!!!

  42. Mike Palenque says:

Thank you Tim for displaying the lords words for the world to see,it allow people to understand that God’s words are cool. For those so call experts that say that you will not make a good NFL quarterback, they do not know the power of God. With God all thinks are possible, keep praying and believing.

  43. Tim,

I say this for the love of your immortal soul, you are a heretic and on the broad road to hell. There is No Salvation Outside the Catholic Church. We are not affliated with the church that calls itself Catholic in Rome. Please go to our site: JohntheBaptist dot us

  44. Elisa says:

Brothers and Sisters, are you worshipers of Tebow or Jesus Christ? These posts seem to indicate the former. You don’t need to wait for a football game to read the scriptures! Open the bible, attend church. ACT as Jesus taught: Humbly serve your brothers and sisters who are in need–without seeking praise. Love your enemies; pray for them–with sincerity. Christianity is not a sideshow at a football game! As a Christian myself, I fear that this site is dangerously close to idol worship, and I can’t imagine that Tebow appreciates being the golden calf. Surely there is better use of the God-given talent you all possess.

  45. Mary says:

as I read William George Norris’ post, the Holy Spirit brought a verse to mind immediately: The BIBLE says there is no salvation outside of: Jesus. Salvation has been provided by a Person…and His sacrifice…not by an institution
    Acts 4:12
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

Jesus died for our immortal souls, and He asks only that you BELIEVE

  48. JBS says:

Not only do we each have the right to free speech, we are all created equal. We have the right to become unequal, as Mr. Tebow has done through excelling at his pursuit.
Jesus said, “By their fruit you will know them.” Fruit includes excellence, and also service to the least of these, Jesus’ brothers….the poor and downtrodden, not to exert power over them, but to give them a hand up…to help them excel at whatever purpose their lives have.
Someone at WordWizards came up with a phrase, “dirty-shoulders” which is very specificly describing one who helps others up without desiring notice or praise. Tim has dirty shoulders, but doesn’t need to point that out to us.
Another purveyor of excellence, Trijicon, has caught flak lately for Bible-verse-markings on some of their products, the best gunsights in the world.
True attention is gained through excellence, not by seeing who can whine the loudest.
None of us would be reading this or commenting here if Mr. Tebow had not excelled. He participates in Pentecost by speaking the language of his native village. Do you understand him, or will you scoff, as some did around 1,977 years ago, saying, “these men are drunk!”?
Even if you are here to scoff, the truth you’ve read so far has barbs on it. It is dangerous to your attitude….it works its way in to your heart.
You are here to see if the Bible is worth reading. How smart is it to say it is not, if you have not? The fruit of many of us who read it and profess to follow its Author may be enough to cause you to say, “It’s not for me.” But is that really excuse enough? They – we – will be, for all practical purposes, have been, judged for ….our…hypocrisy….but is that a reason……?

  49. Jesus says:

thank you Tim for spreading my word

  50. abby m. says:

I believe that the reason of Tim’s bible verses is to take advantage of the pedastool that we have put him on. Because so many people love him and look up to him, he wants to share the gospel and make a difference in this world.
