Nike and Reebok at war over Tim Tebow jerseys and apparel

New York Jets’ newly acquired back-up quarterback Tim Tebow is causing two of the largest sporting apparel companies, fight over his name on their apparel.

Reebok has been ordered to temporarily stop making and selling New York Jets clothing carrying Tim Tebow name after Nike filled a lawsuit accusing it of using the quarterback’s name illigimately.
It also requires Reebok to offer to buy back such apparel from retailers and recall the products from shipping channels. The Denver Broncos traded Tebow to the Jets on March 21.

In his first tweets since being traded to the New York Jets last week, Tim Tebow sent out four tweets and poked fun at himself: “I’ve already said it 44 times so here goes number 45: I’m really excited to be a Jet! Haha!” Tebow used the word “excited” repeatedly during his 30-minute introductory news conference.

Reebok ordered to stop making Tim Tebow apparel after suit by Nike

According to the lawsuit, new Nike-supplied uniforms for all 32 NFL teams will be unveiled next week in New York City, kicking off a five-year deal for Nike to be the league’s exclusive provider of on-field apparel, including game uniforms and sideline apparel. Reebok had been the supplier for the last decade.

The lawsuit said demands for Tebow-related Jets apparel was intense last week during a normally subdued time for NFL merchandise sales.

It said Nike, based in Beaverton, Ore., believes Reebok was shipping large volumes of Tebow-related apparel products to retailers for sale to the public this week, damaging Nike’s ability to capitalize on a “unique and short-lived opportunity.”

The lawsuit added that it was unlikely that a consumer who buys an unauthorized Tebow jersey or T-shirt from Reebok this week will purchase an authorized Tebow item from Nike next week.

Nike Inc. claimed in a lawsuit in U.S. District Court that Reebok International Ltd. has used Tebow’s name on Jets-related apparel without permission since it was announced last week that Tebow was traded from the Denver Broncos to New York. The Tebow trade occurred just before Nike replaces Reebok on Sunday as the supplier of NFL team uniforms.

Nike sued rival Reebok over its sales of apparel featuring Tim Tebow

Athletic shoe and apparel maker Nike Inc. has sued rival Reebok International Ltd. over its sales of apparel featuring Tim Tebow, who was recently traded to the New York Jets to serve as the team’s backup quarterback.

“Tebow’s trade to the New York Jets, coupled with the franchise’s location within the NFL’s largest market and the nation’s media center, has created enormous demand for Tebow-identified New York Jets apparel,” the lawsuit said.

“Reebok has sought to take advantage of this unique, short-lived opportunity by supplying, without authorization or license, Tebow-identified New York Jets apparel to retailers in New York and elsewhere around the country.”

As of March 1, Reebok is limited to selling what remains of its existing inventory of products, which would include Tebow apparel from his former team, the Denver Broncos, not the Jets, according to the lawsuit. Tebow’s trade to the Jets was announced March 21.

On March 23, a representative for Tebow advised Reebok that its use of his name was unauthorized, according to the lawsuit.

A separate licensing agreement, which allows Reebok to manufacture jerseys and other apparel featuring NFL logos, expires on March 31, according to the lawsuit. Nike has a five-year deal, beginning April 1, to supply uniforms to all 32 NFL teams.

Madonna about Tebow on Twitter: “We have so much in common”

Madonna made a cheeky remark about Tim Tebow while she was promoting her new album ‘MDNA’ recently.

When the Material Girl took to Twitter for one night only on Monday to answer fans’ questions, Ryan Seacrest was first in line with a query about Tebow.

“@MadonnaMDNAday since @TimTebow is moving to ny now, will you show him around? #askmadonna,” People quoted Seacrest as tweeting.

The singer responded that she had something in common with the Jets quarterback.

“@RyanSeacrest Id love to show @TimTebow around town…we have so much in common. He’s “like a virgin” and so am I ; )” she tweeted. (ANI)

Tim Tebow is moving to New York Jets

“Excited” was the word Tebow used frequently and relentlessly at a press conference Monday as he was introduced as the Jets’ second-string quarterback and first-string media sensation and quite possibly, the most soft-spoken, humble and likeable guy ever to grace an NFL uniform.

“I’m so excited about being a Jet,” he said as he stood alone at a podium in the team’s field house, used for the one-man news conference because of the crush of media that wanted to attend.

“I’m so honored and humble to be a Jet,” he continued. “I’m so thankful they wanted me.”

Tebow came to the Jets last week in a trade with the Denver Broncos, who jettisoned Tebow after signing free-agent superstar Peyton Manning.

The Broncos let Tebow go after he took over their starting quarterback position during the 2011 season, and led the team to the playoffs and a victory over the heavily favored Pittsburgh Steelers in their first playoff game. Surely the trade would have rankled the Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida.

“There’s no ill will to the Broncos, their coaching staff, Peyton Manning or anybody,” Tebow said. “I’m always gonna root for those guys because we went through a lot together.”

“We’ll have a lot of great memories for a long time from last season.”

Now he seems, well, excited, to make memories in New York.

“I just want to make this team a little bit better because I’m here,” he said.

And how will he do that behind starting quarterback Mark Sanchez? He’s excited to do whatever is asked of him, even if that doesn’t mean getting behind center on Sunday afternoons.

“I’m a football player first and then a quarterback,” Tebow said. “I will give my whole heart to being the best Jet I can possibly be.”

And that includes being a great teammate for Sanchez.

Tebow said he and the Jets starting QB are good friends who get along well, and should make each other better.

“We’ll be stronger together than we would be apart,” he said.

Meanwhile, New York is, you guessed it, excited to have Tebow.
