Ten Most Questionable Moves Of The Offseason

From: FN Football Nation (the BackYard)

How does that old adage go, “Money can’t buy good taste?”

Apparently NFL executives are inflicted with the same dilemma, as merely having the ability to make moves does not necessarily mean they will be good ones.

Here are the ten most puzzling moves of the offseason.

The Denver Broncos Writing a Blank Check to Peyton Manning

The Indianapolis Colts released Peyton Manning because it was too risky to make him the highest paid player in the NFL after multiple neck surgeries cost him the entire 2011 season. So in comes the Denver Broncos to make Peyton Manning…the highest paid player in football after two neck surgeries cost him the entire 2011 season.

Not only did they give Manning all of this money, they got rid of their current starter, Tim Tebow, meaning their future is inexorably tied to the health of a 36-year-old quarterback. The Broncos have gone ahead and guaranteed his $18 million this season, and if he passes his physical next season, two $20 million contracts will be guaranteed to come his way for 2013-2014. This move could make Denver relevant quickly, or it could set their entire franchise back five years.

The Bills Giving Mario Williams a Ton of Cash

No one can say Mario Williams’ primary objective is not winning…oh wait. The former No. 1 overall pick signed a massive 6-year; $96 million contract to go from the AFC South Champion Houston Texans to the cellar-dwelling Buffalo Bills. Let’s just hope the heat doesn’t go out or Mario may have to burn some of that cash just to stay warm up there in the frigid arctic that is Buffalo, New York.

But Mario Williams’ decision to sign isn’t the only questionable move here. It takes two to tango and the Buffalo Bills are leading with their checkbook. Williams was hurt for most of the 2011 season and was only able to record 11 total tackles in five games. But even without the injury concern, Williams’ last three seasons have found him unable to even break the 10-sack barrier. The last time he broke that plateau was, coincidentally, the last time he made a Pro Bowl, 2009.

To put his contract in better perspective, the Chicago Bears only gave Julius Peppers a 6-year, $84 million contract, and that was only after he had proven himself with six, double-digit sack seasons.

Tim Tebow To The Jets

What do most teams do after giving their starting quarterback a 5-year, $58,250,000 contract? Why, they go out and sign another starting quarterback and create one of the biggest media circuses-slash-quarterback controversies the NFL has ever seen.

Everyone knows what Tim Tebow is about, and for most people, they either love him or hate him. That being said, it is a little weird to bring in a QB to compete with Mark Sanchez, whose confidence has already been called into question.

Had the Jets just parted ways with Sanchez and handed the reigns over to Tebow, the move may not have made the list, but the way they have handled this situation does not make a lot of financial sense, and it clearly puts both Sanchez and Tebow in a tougher spot to succeed.

The Giants Trying to Sneak Jake Ballard Through Waivers

Jake Ballard was quickly becoming Eli Manning’s favorite target during the 2011 season. In just his rookie year, Ballard caught 38 balls for 604 yards, which was good enough for 3rd in receiving on the 5th ranked passing offense in the league. But after a knee injury forced him out of the Super Bowl, Ballard was going to miss part of the 2012 season. Still, even coach Tom Coughlin expected him back to play a “significant role” with the team.

It would appear the Giants’ front office got a little too smart for their own good as they released Jake Ballard with hopes he would clear waivers and they would be able to place him on the team’s PUP list(Physically Unable to Perform), thus clearing up another roster spot while still retaining Ballard for the future. But oops, no one gave the Patriots the memo, as they scooped up Ballard and added him to their roster, which already included the best tight end tandem in football (Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez). Nice try New York.

The Dolphins Trading Brandon Marshall For Next to Nothing

It is hard to keep track of all of these general manager-type conversions that have to be done when making deals. This player is worth a first round pick, that player is worth two seconds and a fourth – it’s madness. But what about a player who just put up 1,214 yards en route to his fifth straight 1,000+ yard season?

Apparently the Miami Dolphins’ front office thinks 6-4, 230-pound. wide receivers just grow on trees because they were willing to part was with Brandon Marshall for nothing more than two third-round draft picks. I’m not saying Miami should not have traded Marshall – if they felt he needed to go that so be it – but just giving him away for next to nothing is questionable to say the least.

The Franchise Tag Being Used as a Weapon

The NFL is a business. How many of us have heard that old gem dusted off time and time again to justify poor management? This offseason, Matt Forte, Drew Brees and Wes Welker are all being held hostage at the barrel end of a franchise tag. While the rule was put in place for teams to try and retain their star players, lately, it has been used more as a way to not give a team’s star the long-term deal they have earned.

My only concern here is the negative precedent teams are forming by overly manipulating the way a franchise tag is used. By all accounts, Matt Forte, Drew Brees and Wes Welker had said the right things and did not do the customary holdout; but still, they are now being forced to take a stand which makes them all look like selfish, “in it for the money” types. I’m afraid the wielding of the franchise tag by teams will start to backfire and force star players to leave their clubs as soon as they can for a team with more perceived player loyalty.

The Patriots Letting “The Law Firm” Go

Although the Patriots have never relied too heavily on the running game, their multi-named back, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, had been a solid workhorse for the club. Everyone knows the Patriots live and die with the right arm of Tom Brady, but on those rare occasiones a yard needed to be picked up or a short-yardage TD needed converting, it was Green-Ellis who got the call.

With 11 touchdowns last season, and 13 the year before that, The Law Firm was money on the goal line. Now the Pats turn to the unproven Stevan Ridley and the underachieving Joseph Addai, to anchor their rushing attack. The Bengals now get to have Green-Ellis on retainer to either make a potent one-two punch with Cedric Benson, or fill in as his replacement if he leaves via free agency.

Matt Flynn’s 1-Game Payday

Here is a bit of fun trivia for you – which Packer has thrown for the most yards in a single game? Well, since this category is marked “Matt Flynn,” I’ll just assume everyone knows the question is rhetorical.

Matt Flynn started in one game for the Green Bay Packers in 2011, but Flynn made the most of his opportunity by throwing for 480 yards and six touchdowns and leading the Pack to a 45-41 victory over the Detroit Lions in Week 17.

In Flynn’s other four brief appearances at QB last season notched Flynn a stat line of 2-for-5, 38 yards and one interception. But I guess when you break a franchise’s all-time record; people tend to forget what came before. The Seattle Seahawks jumped on Flynn this offseason and gave him $19.5 million to come break their records.

Chad Ochocinco Being Released By The Patriots

After a less than productive year in New England, the Patriots got rid of Ochocino in favor of a host of middle of the pack receivers. While no one can justify Ocho’s lack of productivity in his first season, he is still the receiver who was just two season seasons removed from his 7th 1,000+ yard campaign.

For a measly $925,000 contract for the 2012 season, it may have been premature for the Patriots to cut bait so quickly. The Miami Dolphins were more than happy to pick him up to fill a hole left by their own questionable move – but we’ll get to that later.

The danger here is that we have seen this dance before. A backup QB getting a small opportunity then becoming a new team’s starter the following year – how has that worked out for Kevin Kolb in Arizona? Maybe Seattle will be different, but for a team trying to turn around their franchise, Flynn is a risky gamble to take.

Blackballed: No Teams Willing To Give T.O. a Shot

Terrell Owens is a Grade-A moron, everyone knows that. But if they blackballed everyone of his ilk from the NFL, games would be played between two centers, three field goal kickers and a punter.

The simple fact is Terrell Owens can still play wide receiver – and do so better than most. In 2010, T.O. caught 72 balls for 983 yards and nine touchdowns in just 14 games. Compared to this season, those stats would have been better than Greg Jennings, Reggie Wayne, DeSean Jackson and Julio Jones – but apparently no team can use that kind of production.

Randy Moss, who has openly admitted to taking plays off and not giving his full effort, just signed with the 49ers after a 2010 season which saw him merely get 393 yards and quit on three different teams – but he is more deserving of a contract than Owens? Something smells funny with the way Owens has been ostracized from the league.

Hey Guys I have read all this as i post How about a few comments seems like everyboty quit posting.

Jaws: Gabbert better than Tebow

By James Walker | ESPN.com

ESPN NFL analyst and quarterback guru Ron Jaworski is ranking his top NFL quarterbacks. At No. 30 was Tim Tebow of the New York Jets, and No. 29 was Blaine Gabbert of the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Which quarterback is better: Blaine Gabbert or Tim Tebow?

41% Gabbert
59% Tebow

(Total votes: 3,728)
Whoa!

Jaworski is one of the most respected quarterback evaluators around. He played the position himself with the Philadelphia Eagles. So his opinion that Gabbert is better than Tebow carries weight.

However, can you rank a quarterback who did not look NFL ready in 2011 over a player who led his team to the playoffs and even won a postseason game?

There are things Tebow lacks as a conventional quarterback. But he does have proven NFL tools, such as toughness, athleticism, work ethic and natural leadership. That was enough to earn Tebow a 7-4 record as a starter last year, in addition to an impressive wild-card victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Conversely Gabbert, who is more conventional, showed little last year. He looked gunshy in the pocket and was 4-10 as a starter. Some are already calling him a bust in Jacksonville.

Many will say Gabbert was more highly-touted coming out of the draft. But some forget Tebow also was a first-rounder in 2010 with the Denver Broncos. Jaworski is counting on Gabbert’s potential with this ranking. Is Jaworski correct?

Buzzy Says NO NO No

Tebow wins media Good Guy award

By Rich Cimini | ESPNNewYork.com

Tim Tebow, who arrived in New York with a reputation for being media friendly, was selected the winner of the 2012 Good Guy Award by the Pro Football Writers of America.

The Good Guy Award is given to a NFL player for his qualities and professional style in helping pro football writers do their jobs. The award was first given by the PFWA in 2005.

Tebow won it for the way he handled the media crush last season, when he led the Broncos to an improbable playoff run and became one of the biggest names in sports. Tebow, traded to the Jets in March, was cited by numerous national writers for how he handled the attention that came with his play on the field during the 2011 season for Denver.

It won’t get any easier in New York, as evidence by his introductory news conference. It drew more than 200 media types.

Previous Good Guy winners:

2005 – Jerome Bettis (Steelers)
2006 – Tiki Barber (Giants)
2007 – LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers)
2008 – Brett Favre (Packers)
2009 – Kurt Warner (Cardinals)
2010 – Drew Brees (Saints)
2011 – Aaron Rodgers (Packers)

Mark Sanchez vs. Tim Tebow – Who Should Pilot The Jets?

by Todd Latzke

Competition can be a good thing. It can make all parties try harder, do more, and make them try to learn new things. It can also cause a lot of confusion and questions. What will happen in the biggest media circus on the planet?? The New York Jets brought in Tim Tebow as a backup to Mark Sanchez at quarterback, but will it stay that way?? I will look at the situation more closely and try and help solve the question.

It has been stated by all New York Jets personnel that Mark Sanchez is the starting quarterback for the 2012 season and that Tim Tebow will be the backup, period. Mark Sanchez was a much heralded quarterback out of USC 4 years ago and was supposed to be the 2nd coming of Joe Namath. He has failed to live up to those expectations as of yet. He has been very inconsistent at times and lost the following that a quarterback needs from his fellow teammates. There was a lot of discussion and turmoil on the team during the 2011 off season when Sanchez did not show great practice habits and seemed very disinterested in general. Sanchez has never had a caliber backup to push him the way Tebow will.

It does not help matters that the Jets didn’t make the playoffs last year after another “promised” Super Bowl appearance by head coach Rex Ryan. It seemed like Santonio Holmes gave up at the end of the year as his frustrations grew with the sub-par play of Sanchez. New offensive coordinator Tony Sparano has stated that the Jets will get back to running the ball more and try and relieve some of the pressure from Sanchez. Last year the Jets were 22nd in running the ball and averaged 30th in per rushing attempt. Shonn Greene’s numbers would probably rise the way Willis McGahee’s rose last year once Tebow took over.

Tim Tebow helped lead the Denver Broncos to the playoffs last year, despite completing fewer than 50% of his passes. His leadership and running ability helped the team to several come from behind victories and even propelled them to an upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs. The Broncos led the NFL in rushing last year and were 6th in yards per rushing attempt. Much of that credit goes to Tebow as he averaged over 5 yards per carry and finished with 660 total rushing yards. Remember that he did not start the season as the quarterback, that was Kyle Orton. Tebow could instantly insert his physical ability into games and the Jets could become the running team the Sparano and Ryan want them to be.

Tebow’s positive attitude seems to rub off on everyone around him and he carry himself and his teammates to higher standards. That seems to be exactly the type of attitude that is needed on a Jets offense that continued to disappoint all last season. Tebow has been a media darling in New York since his arrival and will be a huge fan favorite from day one. Even though he is said to be “the backup”, he has been all over the early practices cheering players on, being positive in every situation, and open for communication for more feedback (even from Sanchez).

Tebow did seem to work well with both Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas last year and I can see him building a very quick relationship with Dustin Keller , Holmes, and rookie Stephen Hill. Again, it is his infectious “can-do” attitude that will help him win his teammates over. I also think the Jets have a better offensive line then the Broncos did with studs Nick Mangold and D’Brickashaw Ferguson leading the way.

The Jets have a very difficult early part of the schedule. They start the year against an improved Buffalo Bills, at Pittsburgh, at Miami, vs. San Fran and vs. Houston. That could be a very difficult road for any team, especially one where the head coach and fan base expect so much. I can see Sanchez entering the season as the starter, but for Tim Tebow to take over after a rough start for the Jets as they will fall behind the New England Patriots in the standings early. If you are looking for a good late round pick in your draft that could turn into instant gold, you need to target Tim Tebow.

2012 Denver Broncos Offense:
A young quarterback stepped into a situation in which his dreadful team appeared to be destined to occupy the bottom of the divisional standings. He energized the fan base and his own teammates, orchestrating a long winning streak and several miraculous fourth-quarter comebacks. He took his team to the playoffs, and even threw for 316 yards in an opening-round victory as a massive underdog. So, what did team president John Elway do to reward this quarterback? He shipped him off for a fourth-round pick.

If there wasn’t such inexplicable hatred and jealousy toward Tim Tebow in the media ranks, particularly on ESPN, Elway would have been criticized very harshly. Elway refused to think heteroclitically, and thus was too stubborn to accept that Tebow could be a successful franchise quarterback in Denver. He did, however, save face with the fans by acquiring Peyton Manning. While this would have been a guaranteed great move three years ago, it’s yet unknown if this transaction will pay off.

Manning is one of the greatest quarterback in NFL history, but how healthy is he? He’s had four (four!) neck surgeries – and this is after he already showed signs of regression in 2010. He struggled that year, prompting ESPN’s Ron Jaworski to comment at the time, “The last couple weeks, as I’ve studied Peyton Manning, he has not been real sharp … I’m not saying it is, but I’m seeing little signs now that the deep sideline throws are not as accurate as they used to be, there’s not the zip on the ball that there used to be. Maybe father time might be catching up with Peyton Manning a little bit.” Again, this was before Manning’s neck procedures; when he was playing most of his games inside Indianapolis’ cozy dome, and not outside, in the elements.

Manning used to be so incredible that he could transform ordinary talents like Austin Collie, Dallas Clark and Jacob Tamme into big-time producers, but now that he’s likely 75 percent (at most) of what he used to be, he’ll need more help around him. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have that luxury because Elway absolutely bungled the 2012 NFL Draft, continuously trading down when he should have been moving up in an attempt to win now. The only competent receiver Manning has to throw to is Demaryius Thomas, who is a terrific talent. Thomas accumulated a mind-boggling 204 yards and the famous game-winning touchdown versus Pittsburgh in the aforementioned playoff victory. He’ll continue to progress and will emerge as a legitimate No. 1 wideout.

The rest of the receiving corps is lacking. Eric Decker caught eight touchdowns last year, but he also dropped 10 catchable passes, which placed him in the top six in that category. Sure, Roddy White, Brandon Marshall and Wes Welker also occupied the top six, but they registered 100, 81 and 122 receptions, respectively. Decker had only 44, so his drop ratio easily would have led the NFL if it wasn’t for Cleveland’s Greg Little. Meanwhile, the Broncos signed Andre Caldwell, who struggled with the Bengals last year, and Brandon Stokley, who has nothing left in the tank.

Elway brought over Tamme to appease Manning, but again, the former Colt tight end lacks talent. The only benefit of this move was to provide Manning with someone he’s comfortable with. Joel Dresseen was also acquired, but he’ll focus primarily on blocking. Denver should hope that Julius Thomas, last year’s fourth-round pick, will emerge. Thomas, a former basketball player, has loads of upside, but is still very raw.

The Broncos ran the ball well last year because of Tebow. With opposing defenses focused on containing the mobile quarterback, there was less emphasis on stopping Willis McGahee. Having Manning under center does not guarantee a strong rushing attack – just look at how Joseph Addai and Donald Brown struggled over the years – also with no Tebow Run to watch for it’s a safe bet that McGahee won’t perform well, especially considering that he’ll be 31 in October with 1,800 career carries wearing down his body. Third-round rookie Ronnie Hillman figures to spell McGahee, but it’s unknown if he’ll succeed in the NFL.

The offensive line is also a mess, as many witnessed in Denver’s postseason loss at New England. Tebow didn’t even have a chance; aging has-beens like Gerard Warren were in his face before he could go through his progressions. Left tackle Ryan Clady thrived in Mike Shanahan’s zone-blocking scheme, but has performed miserably ever since Shanahan left. He surrendered eight sacks in 2009, and six in each of the past two seasons. He needs to be in a zone-blocking system, so it’s unclear why Denver moved away from that in the first place.

Sadly, Clady is one of Denver’s top offensive linemen. Right tackle Orlando Franklin was a sieve last year, but deserves another shot because he was just a rookie. Center J.D. Walton also struggled mightily, prompting Elway to spend a fourth-round selection on Philip Blake. Left guard Zane Beadles is nearly as bad as Walton, while right guard Chris Kuper is the best of the bunch, which is sad because he couldn’t start for many teams in the NFL.

2012 Denver Broncos Defense:
Following one of Tebow’s amazing comebacks, one of the Bronco leaders spoke up in the locker room. He said that this wasn’t just Tebow; it was a full team effort. He was right, for the most part. The defense played a big role in Denver’s mid- and late-season surge. It was also partially responsible for the playoff loss to the Patriots.

Von Miller was the clear-cut Defensive Rookie of the Year, and at one point, it was fair to wonder if he deserved Defensive Player of the Year. He was amazing in every facet of the game, which was especially impressive because he wasn’t playing in a scheme that suited his strengths. If the Broncos still maintained a 3-4 – an argument for another time, since they have mostly 3-4 personnel – he would have been even more prolific.

Miller and Elvis Dumervil combined to produce 21 sacks – a figure that would have been higher had Denver actually established leads in the first half. Left end Robert Ayers, the one player who is meant to be in a 4-3, pitched in with six sacks himself if the playoffs are factored in.

However, despite the presence of Miller, Dumervil and future Hall-of-Fame cornerback Champ Bailey, the stop unit really struggled down the stretch. Miller was never the same following a thumb injury. This only exposed an already-leaky run defense, which surrendered 5.2 yards per carry in the final four games. Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkely was the team’s best run-defender, but he signed with the Saints. Denver compensated for this loss by signing over-the-hill, 34-year-old Justin Bannan and drafting Derek Wolfe in the second round. Wolfe was a favorite of Mel Kiper’s. He can rush the passer (he had 9.5 sacks for Cincinnati in 2011), but figures to be a liability against the run, at least early on in his career.

Denver’s big defensive acquisition this offseason was cornerback Tracy Porter. Known for catching the game-clinching interception in Super Bowl XLIV, Porter struggled in 2011, surrendering a 71.2-percent completion rate, which ranked third-worst among starting corners. Porter signed a 1-year, $4 million “prove-it” deal.

Porter will have his work cut out for him. Yes, he’ll have the luxury of a great pass rush and a legendary cornerback on the other side of the field, but he’ll also have to make up for atrocious safety play. Mike Adams is a mediocre player, while the battery of Quinton Carter and Rahim Moore failed last season. They were both rookies, so perhaps one of them will be able to improve.

Speaking of rookies who will need to step up, 2011 third-rounder Nate Irving must push Joe Mays at the middle linebacker position. Mays is solid against the run, but gets completely lost in coverage. The Broncos could use an upgrade there because weakside linebacker D.J. Williams is facing a six-game suspension for a failed drug test. Even if the suspension is reduced, the 30-year-old was noticably a step slower last season. There wasn’t much made of that, but Williams showed obvious signs of erosion.

2012 Denver Broncos Schedule and Intangibles:
The Broncos made a solid coaching hire this offseason. They brought in Jack Del Rio to replace Dennis Allen, who will now be coaching the Raiders. Del Rio was too lazy to be a head coach in the NFL – Jacksonville’s former owner told the media that he wished Del Rio had a better work ethic – but he’s a terrific defensive coordinator.

Freezing temperatures and thin air should create a hostile environment for opponents, which explains why Denver had an NFL-best 70-18 home record from 1995 to 2005. However, the team is just 24-25 as hosts the past five seasons. Is the Mile High magic dead? It certainly appeared that way when the Chiefs dispatched the Broncos, 7-3, in a must-win Week 17 game.

After a rocky rookie campaign, Matt Prater has been great the past three years, nailing 65-of-78 field goals, including 7-of-10 from 50-plus. More importantly, he’s very clutch. He nailed multiple game-winners in 2011.

Punter Britton Colquitt was outstanding last season, maintaining a 47.4 average with nearly a third of his tries pinned inside the 20 (33-of-101).

Eddie Royal scored on three special-teams touchdowns since 2009, but he’s now with the Chargers. Denver hasn’t really replaced him. Even worse, the Broncos surrendered a return touchdown themselves, which gives them a total of nine in the past five years. That’s not good.

The Broncos could easily begin the year 0-3, as their first three opponents are the revenge-seeking Steelers (home), Falcons (road) and Texans (home). Tough battles ensue following a home game against the Raiders; Denver has consecutive road trips to New England and San Diego before taking on the Saints in Mile High. Once the Broncos fall into a hole, how soon will the fans start calling for Elway’s head because he got rid of Tebow?

Denver Broncos Analysis:
The Broncos made it to the second round of the playoffs with Tim Tebow, so how can they not advance further with Peyton Manning? Well, if Manning isn’t who he once was, Denver will undoubtedly be worse. As discussed, Manning is unlikely to be anywhere near 100 percent. The combination of multiple neck procedures, an already regressing skill set, a new supporting cast, a taxing schedule and the fact that he has to play the majority of his games outdoors for the first time in his career spells trouble.

There are also big expectations in Denver. Big expectations usually mean big failure, as the 2011 offseason-darling Philadelphia Eagles’ “Dream Team” discovered. There’s a very good chance the 2012 Broncos will struggle, leaving many in Denver wondering where this team would be if Tebow were still the starting quarterback.

26,000 People Flock to Hear Tim Tebow Speak About His Dad

By Anugrah Kumar , Christian Post Contributor
June 18, 2012|6:50 am

More than 26,000 people flocked to San Diego’s Qualcomm Stadium to hear New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow speak about his relationship with his dad, Bob, at a grand Father’s Day event on Sunday.

The Christian athlete, who was the special guest for a ceremony titled, “Father’s Day 2012: Encouraging Men To Live, Love & Lead,” in San Diego, Calif., stressed the need for role models for the next generation, and shared how his dad was one for him.

It’s “so frustrating,” he said, that “you have in today’s society so many famous athletes” but few good examples. “If we would come together and be great role models, it would be amazing to see how the next generation turns out,” U-T San Diego quoted him as saying.

Tebow was speaking inside the stadium where he led the Denver Broncos, his former team, to an overtime win against the San Diego Chargers in November. As he spoke on Sunday morning, a plane flew above the stadium pulling a banner that read, “Happy Father’s Day” and “John 3:16.”

“For me, it was about watching my dad. Because he could say whatever he wanted, but I watched him – how he acted, how he treated my mom, how he treated my four siblings, and that’s where I learned the most from my dad is because it wasn’t about what he said, it was about what he did,” said Tebow, dressed in a pink striped shirt, tan slacks and loafers.

Tebow and Pastor David Jeremiah of the host church, Shadow Mountain Community Church, spoke for more than 50 minutes at the event that was free and open to public. Many in the audience were wearing John 3:16 stickers on their faces.

The 2007 Heisman Trophy winner from the University of Florida said his dad challenged him using William Wallace, the Scottish rebel in the Mel Gibson movie “Braveheart.” “It had the biggest impact on my life because every time I would go to practice from then on out, I would think of what my father said to me: ‘Do I really love what I’m doing? Am I passionate about it? And am I willing to sacrifice more than anybody else?’” NFL.com quoted Tebow as saying.

Pastor Jeremiah asked Tebow what he thought of the notion that, “If you are a Christian and you are a man, you can’t really be a man.” Tebow replied, saying he started believing in Jesus while he was a young boy, and was competitive from an early age. He recalled how he was disappointed when a coach told him winning wasn’t everything.

Tebow encouraged the audience to “get in the game” by being active Christians. “I encourage you men to get in the game and finish strong, finish strong for your family, your wife and your sons and daughters.”

He added that while the world looks at him as a football player who’s a Christian, “I look at the world and say, ‘I’m a Christian who happens to play football.”

Tebow also talked about the assurance of salvation, relating it with Father’s Day. “If I know that without a shadow of a doubt that I’m going to spend eternity in heaven with my Heavenly Father, then there’s not a better Father’s Day than that.”

Tebow drew a crowd of more than 15,000 people when he spoke at a non-denominational, outdoor Easter service of Celebration Church in Georgetown, Texas, on April 8.

The quarterback told the audience that America’s culture should get back to “what this country was based on: one nation under God.” He also said he saw no problem in openly talking about his Christian faith, and welcomed the attention his convictions and the “Tebowing” prayer pose draw. “It’s being talked about,” he said. “That’s exciting… It’s OK to be outspoken about your faith

Florida couple bids $100k for a day with Tim Tebow

There are many people across America who would do a lot to spend time with Tim Tebow, but this week, two Florida people upped the ante. At a Friday gala luncheon to benefit Tebow’s charity foundation, an unnamed couple win the prize of a day spent with the New York Jets quarterback with a very large bid of $100,000.

“It was very humbling, and you don’t necessarily feel worthy,” Tebow said Saturday at TPC Sawgrass, at the golf tournament that concluded the foundation’s events. “That day I feel like I’ve got to do a few extra things to be special, you know? I’ve got to try to be a little bit better.”

The nature of Tebow’s socialization is unspecified, as are the names of the bidders — those working for the Tim Tebow Foundation were originally concerned that the winners could pony up, but when they found out the names, there was no more concern. One reason for the suspicion was that the winners live in a part of the Florida Keys that isn’t known for multi-million-dollar homes and gated communities.

Erik Dellenback, the executive director of the Tim Tebow Foundation, told ESPN New York of the intent of the winning bid, and the thought process of the people behind it.

“They live in a part of town that has a lot of people in need and a lot of people with a lot of wealth, and she felt like bringing Timmy to her town down there would maybe change the town. It sounds like she’s going to have a little event where she brings over some of the kids who are in need and some of the kids who are pretty deserving.

“I got goosebumps thinking about it because that’s what the night was. You thought (the bid) was for one reason — which you worry [because] you think, ‘Why is somebody paying $100,000?’ — and then you found out what their motives are and you’re just blown away by how God had moved in the room at the time.”

Dellenback said that Tebow was blown away by the size of the bid, as well.

“I think Tim was stunned. Then I’m sure he went in his head and thought, ‘What am I going to do for a day?’ But it’s great. Now that he knows what he’s going to do, he’s so excited to do it.”

McNabb tells Tebow to Get Off Twitter and Focus on His Job

Tim Tebow has come under some harsh criticism lately due to his regular use of twitter.  Tebow has been known to be very active on the site and regularly tweets to his fans and supporters and has been very open regarding his thoughts on the trade that sent him from Denver to the Jets.

However, 13-year NFL veteran Donovan McNabb is not so fond of Tebow’s regular use of the social media site.  McNabb thinks that Tebow should focus less on his twitter followers and more on learning the Jets’ offense.  Like a Texas Hold em player just starting in a new game, McNabb believes that Tebow should sit back and observe and do less talking.

In a statement on ESPN, McNabb said “Every time that we look up there’s something. He’s reaching out to fans, telling them ‘I love you, I’m working hard. As an NFL player, and as a veteran in this game, no one cares what you’re doing during the offseason.”

“They only care about what you do on the football field. This is why a lot of people in the Denver Broncos locker room had an issue `with Tebow. It’s not how you carry yourself, it is the things you say.”

Tebow apologist Skip Bayless quickly jumped on McNabb’s case saying that Tebow is the most unfairly, over-criticized quarterback” in the history of the NFL.  McNabb quickly corrected him and stated that in fact that he was, hinting of his treatment by fans and the media in Philadelphia.

Oddly enough, the Jets may somewhat agree with McNabb.  According to reports, the Jets are apparently going to limit Tebow’s extra-curricular activities outside of football.  Whether this is to keep the spotlight on Jets starter Mark Sanchez or is done to get Tebow to focus on getting up to speed with the offense has not been made clear.  However, the situation could clearly change should something happen and Tebow take over as starter.

Online poker players have learned to develop their poker strategy by spending extra time studying the game to the exclusion of all other things.  McNabb, and perhaps even the Jets, believe that Tebow should take a similar approach.  There is plenty of time to interact with fans once he has gotten up to speed with the offense or even after the season.  For now, the best approach may be to limit his external football influences and focus on his new job.
