Demaryius Thomas has been a wide receiver in the NFL for two years now and evidently hasn’t spent a lot of time learning to run routes. I guess it’s not all that necessary when you’re watching for Kyle Orton or Tim Tebow to deliver you the football.
Via Sports Radio Interviews, Thomas told 790 The Zone in Atlanta that now that Peyton Manning is in town, the Denver receivers are going to have to bone up on their route tree a little bit.
“To get to play with a future Hall of Famer, I knew I had to step my game up and get in my book more, run routes more, because I never really ran routes much. So I thought it was gonna be a challenge, and it has been so far. But it’s been good, too.” [...]
“You’re gonna have to run the whole route tree now. The comebacks, the slants, the posts, the ins. And I didn’t have to do that much when I was my first couple of years in the league.”
Wow. Two years in the league, and he “never really ran routes much”?
[Les Carpenter: Brian Banks, still chasing his NFL dream, could help the league as more than a player]
What were Broncos practices like before Peyton Manning? Everyone splits into their individual groups, and the receivers all run over to the receivers coach and ask, “Hey coach, what are we working on today?” And then the receivers coach looks over and sees Tim Tebow launching footballs into the fourth row and says, “I really don’t think it matters, boys.”
I did not post this as i thought it was a slam too Neg for me what do u all think
Here is the real history of Teb0w-Thomas dynamic Dont forget to catch the ball DT
USA TODAY fantasy NFL guru Pete O’Brien also offers the following insight on the Teb0w-Thomas dynamic:
Coming off multiple injuries, Thomas made his 2011 season debut Week 7 in Miami, catching a touchdown against the Dolphins in a stunning 18-15 overtime victory.
He was used sparingly during the next five weeks as he rounded into shape. But beginning Week 13 against the Minnesota Vikings, Tebow targeted Thomas more than any other Bronco in seven consecutive games, which included the Broncos’ two postseason outings. During that run, Thomas snared 35 balls for 745 yards and 4 TDs as Tebow looked his way 65 times.
If you extrapolate those numbers for a full 16-game schedule, Thomas would have led the NFL in receiving yards (1,703) and yards per catch (21.3), while finishing tied for sixth in TD receptions (9) and targets (149).
Of course, Thomas’s projections would be better if he didn’t drop a pass for every 5.3 he caught. That’s among the worst catch-to-drop ratios in the league.
On Total Access, Kurt Warner & Charles Davis were just pointing out that DT was injured for much of his first 2 years in the NFL & also didn’t have to run traditional routes at Georgia Tech. So, it’s not Tebow’s fault-or anyone else’s fault-that DT is having to learn to run routes now.
Also, DT does seem like the kind of guy who just says what he thinks/feels w/out thinking about how his words are going to be perceived by others. I don’t think he meant anything anti-Tebow in these comments & suspect the same is true for his supposedly anti-Tebow comments earlier in the year. But I could be wrong…
Yes Buzzy it was very negative, but it’s not anything we have not heard before, what goes around comes around. I really liked DT, but he’s not the first to slam Tebow & he wont be the last & yes Brooke it was a slam.
