McNabb tells Tebow to Get Off Twitter and Focus on His Job

Tim Tebow has come under some harsh criticism lately due to his regular use of twitter.  Tebow has been known to be very active on the site and regularly tweets to his fans and supporters and has been very open regarding his thoughts on the trade that sent him from Denver to the Jets.

However, 13-year NFL veteran Donovan McNabb is not so fond of Tebow’s regular use of the social media site.  McNabb thinks that Tebow should focus less on his twitter followers and more on learning the Jets’ offense.  Like a Texas Hold em player just starting in a new game, McNabb believes that Tebow should sit back and observe and do less talking.

In a statement on ESPN, McNabb said “Every time that we look up there’s something. He’s reaching out to fans, telling them ‘I love you, I’m working hard. As an NFL player, and as a veteran in this game, no one cares what you’re doing during the offseason.”

“They only care about what you do on the football field. This is why a lot of people in the Denver Broncos locker room had an issue `with Tebow. It’s not how you carry yourself, it is the things you say.”

Tebow apologist Skip Bayless quickly jumped on McNabb’s case saying that Tebow is the most unfairly, over-criticized quarterback” in the history of the NFL.  McNabb quickly corrected him and stated that in fact that he was, hinting of his treatment by fans and the media in Philadelphia.

Oddly enough, the Jets may somewhat agree with McNabb.  According to reports, the Jets are apparently going to limit Tebow’s extra-curricular activities outside of football.  Whether this is to keep the spotlight on Jets starter Mark Sanchez or is done to get Tebow to focus on getting up to speed with the offense has not been made clear.  However, the situation could clearly change should something happen and Tebow take over as starter.

Online poker players have learned to develop their poker strategy by spending extra time studying the game to the exclusion of all other things.  McNabb, and perhaps even the Jets, believe that Tebow should take a similar approach.  There is plenty of time to interact with fans once he has gotten up to speed with the offense or even after the season.  For now, the best approach may be to limit his external football influences and focus on his new job.

McScabb needs to mind his own business, Tebow probably works harder than him on the field as well as off it.

  2. Tisa says:

I care about Tebow because of what he does off the field and I enjoy the fact that he communicates with his fans. Sounds like sour grapes on the part of McNabb, considering he has no team.

  3. Tisa says:

Pajo, you are showing a lack of understanding of Tebow if you think he isn’t working hard on the Jets offense and his skills in the off season. It does not take long for a person to send a tweet and he is far from the only NFL player that does so. I am not even sure this story is even accurate. What he does off the field is going to reflect positively on the Jets, inhibiting him will not help their public image. It would be extremely hypocritical for the Jets to limit what he does in his free time when you consider how much time NFL players spend in night clubs, chasing women, and other nefarious activities(getting srrested). Their coach is known for his foot fetish!!!! Timmy does not let anything keep him from preparing for his role as a QB. I was going to let your comments go, but changed my mind because you seriously need to read some background material on Tebow if you are going to comment on what he should or should not be doing.

    • Ang says:

      Well said, Tisa. GBTT!

    • ck says:

Tisa: I am still laughing about the “foot fetish” and you nailed it on all the rest of the stuff too!!! (probably shouldn’t laugh though as that could possibly be seen as a symptom of a seriously unstable/dysfunctional personality disorder!)
Agree too about this guy “Pajo” who has taken all of the posts and put his name instead of David’s on it…what gives?!! Plus, all of the articles that were supposed to be archived are now not available…what is going on with that?!! Ole “Pajo” has some “splaining” to do!!!

P.S. I did read about the “foot fetish” earlier though and hope this does not “rub off” on anyone other than his wife…good grief!!

I don’t think Tim tweets too much-far from it, compared to some other players. But I’ve been wishing for a long time that he’d keep a lower profile. I know he wants to build a cultural platform & wants to go to celeb events to get as many golfing celebs as possible to play in his golf tournament. But for people who don’t understand that, it makes Tim look like an attention craver. And those who don’t understand that will include some of his teammates, which won’t help Tim to be accepted by his them.

I was just reading about Tim’s freshman year at UF the other day & was surprised to see that Urban greatly limited Tim’s exposure to the media during that year. I think Tim would be smart to do the same during the rest of this year-not only to concentrate as much as possible on football, but to try to limit the craziness as much as possible, especially for his teammates & coaches.

ps: It’s ironic that McNabb is criticizing Tim about not working enough. If anyone remembers, McNabb got benched by Shanahan during the last 2 minutes of a game a couple of years ago. Shanahan told the media that it was b/c he didn’t think McNabb had the ‘cardiovascular conditioning’ to perform well in that final 2 minutes. Commentators laughed at that at the time & wondered if there wasn’t something else going on. But when McNabb showed up for 2011 training camp overweight-& even had grown a neckbeard to try to cover up the obvious double chin he’d sprouted-it became clear Shanahan had been making a point about McNabb being out of shape & refusing to get in shape. And that Shanny was right. Michael Lombardi, in particular, has ranted about McNabb’s non-existent work ethic over the past couple of years. It’s apparently the main reason McNabb’s played so badly in recent years & why no team wants him. And the fact that part of McNabb’s comments included this “There’s no need to keep trying to have the fans behind you” is laughable coming from McNabb. The only time he ever had the Philly fans behind him was after he’d been traded to the Redskins & came back to play against the Eagles. Eagles fans booed him from the moment he was drafted. So maybe McNabb should have tried to get them on his side via twitter or FB like Tim does.

    • Tisa says:

Brooke, I agree with you about the lower profile. I think Timmy is doing that now. I hated the celeb stuff because that is a direction I never pictured Timmy going. I am a Gator and a high school teacher in Pensacola and a Southern Baptist so I have been aware of Timmy and his family for a long time. My students played against him when he was at Nease and then, of course, he went to UF. When I have been around him he just seems like a very sweet, polite country boy. Meyer limited his media exposure when he was a freshman because he was not at all sure how things would go with him being away from home for the first time, even though Peter, his brother, was still on campus. Meyer had other concerns as well but Timmy never wavered from his Christian upbringing. But, Timmy is a grown man now and I think he handles the media very well, even though they still find ways to misconstrue what he says. I don’t want to see the Hard Knocks thing because it will hype the criticism when training camp starts. I would love to see the Jets exclude the media for a while and let Timmy get his feet on the ground. But I know they are not as concerned about Timmy as we are. I have a more positive feeling about Timmy being with the Jets than some of the people posting here. I never liked Denver because I knew Elway did not want him and being there was just delaying his future. I was afraid he would not get traded and would just sit behind Manning for 3 years, not helping his development at all. Even if Timmy does not start in NY he will see the field enough to convince a coach to want him as a starter, but I just have a feeling he may get to start sooner rather than later.

      • Brooke says:

Hi Tisa. Thank you for that info. I envy your knowing about Tim for so long-I wish I’d discovered him years earlier.

If by ‘celeb stuff’ you mean his going to the Hollywood parties & premiere earlier this year, I was put off by that at first, too. Then I realized that it plays into the 2 things that we know Tim’s all about: building a platform to spread his faith & raising money for his charitable projects (I think he partly schmoozes w/celebs to get more celebs to play golf in his tournament).

I also have a good feeling about his going to NY. Although every time I see someone in the football world predict that Tim will do well w/the Jets & even be the starter by mid-season, I get nervous-LOL. I don’t want the team to be on Hard Knocks again, either-there’s already been too much hype.

McNabb needs to focus on himself and quit bashing Tebow! I am so tired of so many bashing Tebow, I have been to many New York Jets fans blogs and he is getting bashed on all of them.

The news stories out of New York are also bashing him and badly in the comments sections. Makes me sick. Then Rex Ryan saying that Tebow is a good football player and Mark Sanchez is a good Quarterback also makes me ill.

I am worried about Tim on the Jets I feel Rex Ryan will put a damper on his learning to be a better quarterback and more on special teams and wild cat plays, then other teams will only view him as a special player and not a starting NFL quarterback, I am worried and keep praying each day that this is not the way things are going.

But more and more I am seeing the writing on the wall. I just wish Tim would have had control of his own destiny in the trade. All we can do is support and keep praying that he will be a starting NFL quarterback soon.

    • lalalala says:

Tawk, Tim will always have critics and haters as long as he’s playing football. That will never end, even if he leads his team to a superbowl. The skepticism among Jets fans and blogs and journalists are understandable. I would have been stunned if he was embraced by them immediately. Tim will win them over in due time, but even at that, there will still be haters. All I’m saying is that the hate towards Tim in NY is not a surprise and if you don’t want to read negative comments, then stay away from the forums and blogs. I believe God put him in NYC for a reason and it’s all going to work out. But don’t expect things to be easy and all rosey cotton candy.

    • lalalala says:

Also, many fans in Jacksonville does not want Tim there. The GM and coaches don’t want him. The owner wanted him to sell tickets. If he had gone to JAX, the venom in the forums and blogs probably would not be much different from NYC. The mentality down there is not good. Many fans rather have empty seats than Tebow be a Jaguar. The situation might have been similar to Denver where he was playing with a coaching staff that didn’t believe in him or know what to do with him.

  6. Brooke says:

“But more and more I am seeing the writing on the wall. I just wish Tim would have had control of his own destiny in the trade.”

He did, tawk. Even Tim’s own agent confirmed that the reason the Broncos sent Tim to the Jets is b/c Tim said he preferred the Jets over the Jags.

Also, I wish we could access the articles & comments on this site from the preseason of last year, b/c they’re identical to your comment. Everyone was panicking, worrying, demanding that Tim be traded, saying insulting things about EFX, etc. Yet last year ended up going pretty well, didn’t it? (I’m currently downloading & listening to eps of The Dave Logan Show from last preseason. It’s fascinating listening to what ‘experts’ had to say on that show back then, now that I know how well Tim & the team ultimately did last year. It reinforces just how little ‘experts’ know. I’d highly recommend this to others-they’re available via iTunes.)

As for the criticisms of Tim by the media & commenters on sites: I want them to continue & possibly even increase, just like they did in last years’ NFL preseason. I don’t want people lying about Tim’s character or private life-although even that wouldn’t be anything new. But I’d love Merrill, Boomer, & company to continue saying that Tim can’t play, can’t throw, is stupid, will never get any better, ‘it’s embarrassing that the Jets would think that they could win w/Tim’, Tim should just quit football/go work in the orphanage full-time, etc. I’ve been following Tim since 2009 & have seen/heard all the criticisms & dire predictions countless times, which is why I want them to continue. I’ve seen how Tim responds to them: he plays better & he wins. And I believe he’s going to do that again this year.

    • tawk says:

Thanks Brooke, I know he picked the Jets, but I wonder if Rex and others lied to him about getting a chance to be the starter. After Elway and co. I really don’t trust anyone. I just pray Rex believes in Tim and will let him be the quarterback he is destined to be. I worry that Tim will not speak up for himself and will do anything to please the coaches.

I just hate to see his growth as a NFL quarterback put on hold or possibly stopped. I guess only the future will tell, all I can do is pray that it will all work out.

      • Brooke says:

I completely agree w/your concern about Tim’s growth & also have my doubts about Rex Ryan. I mentioned in that earlier post that I was listening to eps of The Dave Logan Show from the Broncos preseason/early regular season last year (once again, to everyone, I can’t recommend this highly enough, esp when you’re having doubts/anxiety about Tim’s immediate future in the NFL). On one of the eps I listened to yesterday, the hosts asked the audience which people in sports they hate. It just dawned on me today that, back in early Sept of last year, I probably would have included Rex on that list. Maybe it wasn’t hate, but I reeaallly didn’t like him-or at least, didn’t like who I *thought* he was (see next paragraph for more on that). And I haven’t been able to stand Sanchez since he was at USC, so I didn’t like the Jets. That’s why Rex being the one guy in the entire NFL to have belief in Tim’s ability enough to outbid everyone else is so ironic to me. But he is the son of a successful former head coach, so he certainly knows football. Also, I don’t know that Rex-or anyone w/the Jets-specifically told Tim that he’d have a chance to be the starter. I think Tim just knows that, given how badly Sanchez did last year. And, more than that, he knew the Jets coaches actually wanted him, whereas the Jags coaches didn’t. And let’s not forget, Tim *is* willing to speak up. Remember, after Josh was fired last year, he requested a face-to-face meeting w/the owner to ask him if he was still wanted by the Broncos.

One more thing about Rex & the Jets: there was an NFL vid done a few months ago that included brief clips of several NFL teams praying together before the game. To my great surprise, the Jets were one of those that do this, led by Rex himself. I’m guessing Rex was raised Catholic-& we know how well Tim did w/another Catholic coach at UF. ;D

Oh, and I also agree w/your last comment: we need to keep praying. :)

  7. Brooke says:

Also, I just counted. Tim’s sent a total of 7 tweets since March 11th. 1 of them had to be sent in 3 tweets & another had to be re-sent b/c people couldn’t see the first one, so I only counted each of those as 1. Even if you count those individually, it still comes out to only 11 tweets since March 11th. Yeah, Tim’s really preoccupied w/twitter, isn’t he? I now can understand why so many Eagles fans couldn’t stand McNabb.

    • ck says:

Brooke: Thaks for the update on McNabb and guess we will all have to just “consider the source.” If anything, Timmy should update his fans more b/c we have to go to “Tebow’s Eye Black” for info.!! He will not be able to please everyone so he needs to just keep doing what he has been and that is silencing his critics with all of his good deeds, etc.!

And one last post before I have to leave…

Here’s a link to a ‘Numbers Never Lie’ video. They show that, statistically, Tim will be an asset to the Jets. And the vid has to be seen just for the drawings of Tim in it (my favorite: Tim as King Kong):

Has anyone joined Tim’s Foundation? If so, how long did it take for you to receive your membership packet? I joined online on Feb 1st and haven’t received my packet as of today, 4/24.

  16. Tisa says:

Ang, you should have received it after about 3 weeks. There is a place on the website to email them. Go to that and send them a message. I will tweet Angel Gonzalez when I get home from school today to let him know that I am reading a lot from people who have not gotten their packets. Tebow would never like it if it seems that people are being ignored.
