NFL Lockout Could Happen This Week

Casual Tim Tebow fans who may not follow NFL Football that closely have probably heard about the potential NFL Lockout, but may not full understand what it means – and how it will affect Tim Tebow. The current collective bargaining agreement between the players union and the owners expires on March 3, 2011.

Barry Wilner of the AP described the lockout as:

If the owners impose a lockout of the players after the collective bargaining agreement expires at the end of the day Thursday, there would be no on-field football action or communication between players currently in the NFL and the teams. Team doctors would be allowed to monitor the progress of injured players, but not at the team’s facility, the league says.

No offseason workouts or minicamps would be held during a lockout. No players, including those drafted in April or rookie free agents, could be signed. Players would not have medical coverage provided by the teams, but can continue their coverage by paying for it themselves.

Should the lockout last long enough, there would be no games.

A lockout is a right management has under federal labor law to shut down a business upon the expiration of a collective bargaining agreement. Employees have the same right — they can strike, something the NFLPA did in 1982 and 1987.

From what I’ve heard, under the current agreement players get 60% and owners get 40% of everything that comes in. The owners think this is not fair – and I happen to agree with them. They need to come closer to 50/50 and also get rid of the insanely high rookie salaries.

So what does this mean for Tim Tebow? One, he will not be able to practice/workout at the Broncos facility and he will not be able to work with any of the coaches. If the lockout is still going on after the draft, Tim will not be able to participate in minicamps and/or training camp – depending on how long the lockout goes on for.

These practices are crucial for a player in Tim’s position. Tim is fighting for a chance to be the Denver Broncos starting quarterback. Without all this extra practice time it will certainly set him back. Tim will still be able to workout and practice on his own, but he won’t get to spend any time with John Fox and the new Broncos coaching staff.
