The Question We All Want Answered

In a recent Q&A with Jeff Legwold of the Denver Post, a fan asked “When is a good time to play Tim Tebow”. We’ve been fighting for this since preseason! But take a look at part of Legwold’s reply.

Consumer confidence in the Broncos is low. When that happens, playing Tebow becomes a business decision as well as a football decision. Empty seats are the bane of any professional team, especially one that has so much pride in its decades-long sellout streak. There were a lot of empty seats Sunday in Denver at the Broncos-Rams game.

Despite very little playing time, Tim Tebow still has the best selling jersey in the NFL. He is extremely popular and the fans want to see him play. Legwold is right. This is going to become a business decision very soon as the Broncos continue to lose and people stop going to the game. Imagine the headline of the front page of the Denver Post tomorrow reads “Tim Tebow To Start!” They stadium would be sold out instantly and the Broncos owners would be lining their pockets with cash.

Right now, it appears to be Coach McDaniels decision to play Tim Tebow.

“I don’t know. I’m not willing to go there,” McDaniels said recently when asked if he would replace Orton with Tebow with Denver out of the race. “That is not the case right now, so we will think about that when that happens, but it is not on our minds right now.”

It might not be on your mind… but I bet it is on the owner’s mind!

  1. Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video to make your point.

  2. I was looking out for info about this on Google and found your piece. I found it to be really useful. Thanks

You made some good points there. I did a search on the topic and found your blog.

Good point David. Thanks for the update. I had not given any thought as to how the owners view this situation. Keep up the good work.

Once they pre maturely start Timmy over a quarterback that is having a banner year statistically all of you will be saying Timmy is just not NFL material; I agree he should be getting quite a few snaps in game time situations but to start him over Orton is just a slap in the face to Orton for no reason Denver needs a running back. Timmy will start when it is his time.and yes from a temporary monatary stand point starting him would fill the seats up

I have to say that Tebow is not getting enough starts than he deserves. The Broncos are going down hill in every catagory all they need is something and that something is Heisman Winner sitting on the bench.

I agree w/swinney. I’d love to see Tim get more playing time, but wouldn’t want to see him simply started out of a desire to sell more tickets. That was what many of us were afraid would happen if he was drafted by the Jaguars. Remember, Tim’s only been getting a small percentage of each week’s practice time-Orton’s been getting probably well over 80%.

Despite all the injuries with the players on The Bronco’s Team, it can be said that for obvious reasons Coach McDaniels is trying to protect Tebow b/c he doesn’t want to see him end up with Orton’s mess! In other words, Orton owns it and why should Tebow take any of the blame!! If he had been able to motivate the players around him then it would have been an entirely different scenario! Seems it takes more than passing percentages to win games!! I, for one, applaud Coach McDaniels for taking the time to develop his players…look at Colt McCoy and I think you can get the picture (injured)!! Besides, now it is a moot point as the season is pretty much over!

I actually read a thread in the Denver Post after their loss last week that fans were boycotting going to games until the Broncos fired McDaniels. Which partially explains why there aren’t butts in the seats at Mile High.

Secondly, although Tebow would draw fans, now that they have the interim coach, he is also trying to prove that he can become the next full time head coach and he will go with the personnel that he feels gives the team the best chance to win. I don’t know if that’ll be Tebow since he hasn’t had an opportunity to get many reps in practice as the 2nd string QB. I don’t see much happening to their starting line this week, Tebow might get called for a few more plays, but ultimately, the determination on starting QB will be based on this guy trying to win a full time head coaching spot.

@ CK Colt did a VERY good job coming in as the 3rd string. Although he went 3-2, he beat the Patriots and the Saints and came this close to beating the Jets. His high ankle sprain was unfortunate, but a LOT of Browns fans are clamoring for him to take back the starting spot as soon as he’s healthy. The difference between Tebow and McCoy is that McCoy was more NFL ready coming in since he came from a primarily passing spread attack at Texas. UF runs an option spread that’s highly dependent on a mobile QB (and thanks to some recruiting decisions) UF’s option spread was 100% dependent on a mobile QB. Nothing about Florida’s offensive system translates well to the way they are coaching at the NFL level. Except the WIldcat formations, and Miami is the only team who runs the Wildcat on a consistent basis and for some reason they’ve gotten away from it lately. Though Tebow looks bright when he’s out there it’s because there have been plays designed for him to run in ways he’s comfortable running them (e.g. out of the shotgun). Maybe this late in the season he’d be ready for more, but he’s definitely not going to go in and run a true passing attack with the precision you would like to see. He will get there in time ( or prove his critics correct…). All that being said, at this point, I don’t think the Broncos have anything to lose putting him in there more or even starting him. I don’t see the Broncos doing any worse with Timmy under center.
