Several of the reports I’ve read out of Broncos camp the first few days suggest that Tim Tebow may still be running the ball too much. Tim was not your typical quarterback in college – the Gators asked Tim to run the ball … a lot. They designed plays specifically for it. The NFL is a different beast. While Tim doesn’t have to be a true pocket passer like Peyton Manning, he can’t just tuck the ball and run every other play. The defenders in the NFL is much bigger, faster and stronger – the opportunities to make big plays won’t be there.
Now we don’t know if Tim is running the ball in practice more than a traditional QB by design or if it’s something he’s doing on his own. He’s probably seeing open lanes and taking advantage of them to grabbed 4-5 yards.
Currently, Tim is wearing an orange jersey at practice meaning defensive players cannot hit him. I can’t wait for the Broncos first preseason game so we can see how well he performs in a live game.
Here’s a recap from yesterday’s practice from NFL writer Dennis Georgatos:
Rookie quarterback Tim Tebow had an up-and-down practice. Trying to dodge pressure, Tebow lost the ball in traffic and linebacker Mario Haggan snagged it as it bounced off his arm, returning the fumble for a TD. Later in team drills, Tebow brought the training camp crowd to its feet by using his legs. He avoided the pass rush and scrambled up the middle, breaking into the clear and leaving gasping defenders in his wake en route to a long touchdown run. Meanwhile, Tebow finished second in the first post-practice sprint to linebacker Jammie Kirlew. But Tebow, who has been regularly leading the pack, didn’t let Kirlew get the jump on him again, leading the way for the rest of the team’s sprints.
If you have any thoughts or pictures from Broncos training camp please send us a tip.
If you’ve read or seen anything on ESPN about it, Josh McDaniels is trying to figure out if using Tim in the wildcat “wild horse” formation will or could be effective
If, at this point, Tim is still running w/the ball, instead of reading defenses & throwing the ball, then imho he’s running too much. Unless, of course, it’s a play his coach has called. But that doesn’t seem to be the case.
The Broncos site, milehighreport.com, has a podcast (available via iTunes). On the 4/28 ep, the host made a very convincing argument for Tebow not being able to run nearly as much in the NFL as he did in college. It’s simply too dangerous.
I love this guy! Your faith will take you far. Can’t wait to see you play…
