From GatorZone.com, “University of Florida quarterback Tim Tebow (Jacksonville, Fla.) was recognized by ESPN on Tuesday, receiving an ESPY nomination for Best Male College Athlete. The award show will be held at the new NOKIA Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles on July 16 and will air on ESPN on July 20 at 9 p.m. ET.”
Tebow has some tough competition this year. Though he is the reigning Heisman Trophy winner, he will be going up against some stud players like Tyler Hansbrough and Michael Beasly. I think from a national publicity aspect, Tebow is by far the most popular of the three. Football is still king in the country, thus giving Timmy an edge in my opinion. More people watched Tim Tebow light up defenses and break all types of records last year, then watched those two basketball players come up short in the NCAA Tourney.
Tim Tebow is going to need a bigger trophy room the way his college career has started. Good luck, and don’t forget to tune in to watch it. Unfortunately since it isn’t broadcast live, we’ll already know the winners before it airs.
Don’t count either of those guys out, especially Hansbrough, who has won multiple player of the year awards, will almost certainly be UNC’s all-time leading scorer, and is on track to get his jersey retired.
Besides, he helped take UNC to the Final Four this year before a national television audience.
Beasley was third in scoring and first in rebounding in the NCAAs this year, and did notch one win in the tourney.
As a team, Florida came up short in a non-BCS bowl game.
I still have Tebow the favorite, but other athletes certainly make a case.
