Kids can learn from Tebow, fellow pros at W&M Colonial All-Pro football camp

Jets QB, wideouts Cruz, Fitzgerald among instructors

WILLIAMSBURG — William and Mary might never be the same after “Tebow Mania” comes through this week.

New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow headlines the list of guest instructors at the W&M Colonial All-Pro football camp from June 24-27. He’s joined by New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz and Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald. The NFL guests join Tribe football coach Jimmye Laycock and his staff in the annual event on the William and Mary campus.

The camp, which is for ages 8 through rising seniors in high school, has had some of the top names in football as guests in previous years, including Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, former longtime Packers quarterback Brett Favre and recently retired Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

But none of them have a following quite like that of Tebow, a Heisman Trophy winner and national champion with Florida, who won six of the first seven games he started with Denver to boost the Broncos to the playoffs. Tebow had just a 72.9 passer rating and was traded in the offseason to the Jets, where he’s a backup to Mark Sanchez. His habit of dropping to one knee in prayer during football games, especially after touchdowns, started a movement called “Tebowing.”

Last season was a breakout one for Cruz, as he finished with 1,536 yards and nine touchdowns in his first NFL season as a starter. Cruz helped lead the Giants to their second Super Bowl victory in four years, beating New England 21-17. Like Tebow, Cruz also has a signature move in games, as he does the salsa dance after he scores a touchdown.

For his career, Fitzgerald has accumulated nearly 10,000 yards and 73 touchdowns as the top offensive target on the Cardinals’ roster. After scoring 13 touchdowns in the 2008 season, when the Cardinals advanced to the Super Bowl, losing to Pittsburgh, Fitzgerald shared the Madden video-game cover with Steelers safety Troy Polamalu.

The camp is not open to the public.

Jets’ Tebow says he has to improve ‘everything’

Jets Blog POST STAFF REPORT

Jets quarterback Tim Tebow knows what he has to work on to become a starter in the NFL.

“Everything. This my third year and my third offense. That’s been a struggle,” Tebow said in a recent interview with GatorZone.com. “Eventually, I’ll know them all, hopefully. I think understanding offense very well, that’ll be a key. And just continuing to work on fundamentals.”

Tebow worked under two different coaching staffs with the Broncos and now has to learn offensive coordintator Tony Sparano’s offense with the Jets after being traded this offseason. Tebow won’t be alone as Sparano is new to the Jets staff, replacing beleaguered offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

“My biggest weakness has probably been fundamentals,” Tebow said. “The offense we ran at Florida, I had great fundamentals for that, with my feet. Now, being under center, play-action, seven-step drops, being in the pocket, it’s different. The great quarterbacks aren’t necessarily super-athletic, but they have great rhythm and timing because of their feet. … Sometimes I want to go so fast, so having rhythm and timing is something I need to work on every day.”

The Jets have maintained that Mark Sanchez is the team’s starting quarterback and Tebow was not brought in to compete for that spot, but to help the team in the Wildcat and other specific packages. But many believe that if Sanchez struggles, Tebow will be given a chance with the first team. Tebow said that he will not root for Sanchez to fail.

“We have a great relationship, on and off the field,” Tebow said of Sanchez. “It’s really very easy to say I am rooting for him. I will not root against him. I wish him nothing but the best. Now, that doesn’t mean I have to try any less, but I really think he’s done a great job. They’ve been in the AFC Championship game twice he’s been there. He’s a good quarterback and he’ll continue to work hard and be the best he can.”

The popular backup said Jets coach Rex Ryan is nothing like former Florida coach Urban Meyer, who led the Gators two national titles with Tebow as his quarterback.

“He’s actually a really cool guy, really down to earth. He’s unlike Coach Meyer, who is always amped up and wired,” Tebow said. “Coach Ryan is really relaxed and laid back. After practice, we’ll come in and he goes in the sauna or steam room and hangs out. He’ll sit and laugh and joke with me.

Once he asked, ‘How did you do that against our defense last year?,’” referencing Tebow leading the Broncos on a 95-yard game-winning drive against the Jets in Week 11.

Tim Tebow says he’s ‘rooting’ for Sanchez

By James Walker | ESPN.com

If there is any tension between New York Jets quarterbacks Mark Sanchez and Tim Tebow, anyone would be hard-pressed to see it. Everything between these two teammates and competitors has been kosher since Tebow was acquired in a trade this offseason to push Sanchez, the incumbent starter.

SanchezTebowTebow recently returned to the University of Florida, his alma mater, and expanded on his rapport with Sanchez.

“We have a great relationship, on and off the field. It’s really very easy to say I am rooting for him. I will not root against him,” Tebow told Gatorzone.com. “I wish him nothing but the best. Now, that doesn’t mean I have to try any less, but I really think he’s done a great job. They’ve been in the AFC Championship Game twice [since] he’s been there. He’s a good quarterback and he’ll continue to work hard and be the best he can.”

Tebow recently accepted an invite to Sanchez’s “Jets West” camp, where offensive players will practice together in California. That’s another good step in the rebuilding process for a group that imploded last season.

Many thought Tebow’s presence would rattle Sanchez. But the Jets’ starter is handling the situation well. It appears the two have a good, mutual friendship. Both have faced some ups and downs in their careers, and the Jets hope Tebow and Sanchez can bring the best out of each other.
